Question Compression Blow By

My truck is beginning to leave a quater size spot of oil every night that is obviously coming from the crankcase vent. This has to be compression blow-by, right? Any recommendations on oil treatments or change of weight? Currently running Rotella 15 30. North Alabama.

Probably, and it's normal. If your truck still has the collection bottle, you might want to unsrew it and dump the contents. I say "still" because many of us have removed the bottle, and run an extension hose right down below the front of the engine to prevent the oily mess.

I have changed oil from Rotella 15W40 to straight DELO 4o. Also, added 20% Lucas Oil Treatment. That seems to have illiminated the compression blow-by. At least, I do not see any new oil spots in the driveway! Anybody have any thoughts possitive or negative regarding my choice of oil?

Oil choice seems great.. The Rotella products have always been given the thumbs up..

As far as LUCAS goes.. Here is some reading for ya..

I wonder if you must own a V-8 diesel.. This is the wrong forum for you.. BTW, there are some rather powerful CTD's in your town that I know personally.. You might get a surprise one day..

Lil Dog,

Checked out the Bobistheoilguy website...scary stuff. I feel like I need to go home and change my oil immediately! Clearly, the Lucas additive does not appear to be good for the engine. I have always been leary of putting additives of any type in any my trucks and this is the first time I have ever used an additive. I must say that adding the Lucas treatment and changing to a straight 40 weight has fixed my leak problem but, I would rather the truck drip a little oil than for it to have a catastophic oil system failure!

Now I am back to square one!! What do I do??!?! Should I go back to a 15W40 and let it drip or, do I stick with the straight 40 weight Delo that I have put in there? HELP!!!!

Put a pan in your driveway to catch the drip and don't worry about it.
A little drip is normal
The reason most diesels do this and gassers don't is because the gassers vent back into the air intake. Can't do that on turbo charged engine because of the higher pressure instead of vacuum.

Well I never knew about the problems with additives either till I read that.. The demo in the stores looked good enough to me, but I always wondered.

The leak is normal venting and some oils are better at the vapour release than others.. The flow from the engine is the same, but some oils don't mist as other do. I have always seen the drip on all my trucks, I never worried about it till it starts coming from somewhere else.

There are separators out there that I remember on the TDR for vapour recovery. I think it was by a company called Airsep.. I am not sure..
