Clear fluid on bottom of NV4500?
Howdy,I relplaced clutch 6 months ago,I have clear oil that is slowly dripping off of bottom of tranny mount.I have checked top of tranny,not wet,it can't be t-case because that takes ATF,bellhousing is not wet,I'm guessing it is the tranny fluid,It seems to get T-case wet up high and leak down it,any idea?Thanks
It may be a leak between the main (iron) transmission case and the aluminum rear housing. They are sealed at factory with anaerobic sealer, which doesnt seem to last forever. If you can clean and dry it good with brakeclean and compressed air, sometimes you can help pinpoint the leak by pressurizing the transmission VERY slightly through the breather and watching along the parting line of the two housings for seepage. Watch at the top rear where the top cover and the rear housing meet the iron case. There are also some shift rail plugs there in the top cover. They're not usually a problem, but who knows...

If that is the leak, one would have to remove the rear housing, clean the sealing surfaces, and reseal it. The good news is that the transmission can be left in the vehicle for that repair. It would be an ideal time to check and replace the 5th gear nut. That's right where it lives. Do a search if you're not familiar with the 5th gear nut. Lots of info.
Anyway, the factory calls for anaerobic sealant between the rear housing and case, but I've had great success with Permatex Ultra Grey RTV sealant. It also works well to reseal the top cover-to-case, but to do that, you must remove the whole transmission.
