check engine/low volts

I recently purchased a 93 2500 4wd ,it runs great and I'm pleased with the mileage (18) even with the OD not working. My major problem is that one of those fusible links burned open under the hood and the volts went to about 8 and the check engine light came on.repaired the link and problem disappeared for one day.Next morning same thing. Some searching showed that another link had burned open next to the first one.The wiring is ok now but still low volts and Ck eng light but not all the time .Took alternator out and had it checked at two places ,worked like a champ.Found relay on wheel well that goes to the field conn on Alt.Cleaned contacts and beat on relay a little then it worked ok 14.5 volts and no light. But problem comes and goes.Could ignition sw have somthing to do with this or that little relay?I read some posts about a sensor on front of engine
and will ck that . Thanks for any suggestions!

Re:check engine/low volts

I am not sure but will take a few wild guesses and see if it steers you in the right direction.
Once you told us that you had the alternator checked my first thought was that you had an over voltage condition. Not sure on your model but if you have an external voltage regulator, (probably firewall mounted) that may be messed up. Do you have a functioning voltage meter on your truck? If so, is the voltage always less than 14.5 volts or does it go higher at times?
Another thought was that you may have a bad ground on the battey. Is the battery grounded to the engine? If there is a bad ground between the battery and the engine then on startup any other ground between the engine and the battery is carrying the load and some of that may be going to places never intended to carry that high an amperage.
Are both battery terminals clean?
That's all that comes to mind at this time. If anything else pops up will let you know. Hopefully someone with a better knowledge of the electrics of your truck will have the exact answer for you soon.
