Can't shift

I hope someone can help. I pulled out of my driveway this morning and when I went to put it into gear, it wouldn't go into gear at all. If I put the transfer case into neutral, I could shift but as soon as I put the T Case into 2H again, it would start going forward with the clutch fully depressed and then it would stall out. I managed to get it back into the driveway, and there it sits. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked the fluid in the clutch master cylinder??? Hopefully you have just blown a hydraulic part, master cylinder, slave cylinder or line.....

Your clutch is not fully disengaging. I wish I could be more specific about your problem or fixes. But whatever it is, it's in your clutch somewhere (linkage, clutch disc, pressure plate, etc.)

I've recently pulled out the VP and changed all the seals. Could this have anything to do with it if the pump was put back in somehow differently than it should be. I know that the VP controls the 4X4 and I was able to get it into gear by shifting the transfer case into neutral, but as soon as I shifted out...

Sorry but I don't know about the VP44 and the 4x4.

But try this if you can:
1. Point the truck toward open country with engine off
2. Put truck in gear and transfer case in gear
3. Depress clutch fully
4. Try to start truck

If the truck lurches or moves forward then your clutch is NOT disengaging for whatever reason.

If the clutch master is full and the slave is working, you either have a disc that has blown apart or the pilot bearing has seized to the input shaft of the trans. Either one, the trans and clutch has to come out. If it is the pilot bearing seized to the shaft, you will probably need to replace the trans input shaft. comon problem.

The vacuum pump has nothing to do with the transmission dragging.

Given that the drag is so severe that it kills the engine, I would suspect that your clutch slave or master cylinder has failed. If so you can pull the assembly and test it. If you need a new one, go to NAPA and get their replacement product. It will allow individual component rebuilding and/or replacement in the future, and the Dodge deal is a swap of the entire assembly every time.

If this does not turn out to be the problem, but it is a locked pilot bearing you are going to have to pull the transmission. That can get pretty tough if the pilot bearing has locked to the input shaft. Be sure you use a really solidly connected transmission jack and have a very level surface on which to roll it all back when the housing bolts and driveshaft are disconnected. It may even be necessary to use a chain and come-a-long to pull the transmission back if the pilot is really locked. If you do this, take the chain all the way back to the rear bumper and the frame. Do not pull from the rear differential, or you can spring the housing.
