Angry Bad howl when steering

Coming home from work tonight, the truck started moaning whenever I turned the steering wheel slightly. Stopped at Dodge and they said it could be a tie rod too tight or the steering box. Has anyone else had problems with the steering box? I have 40,000 miles on the truck. I noticed that the steering box is completely rusted compared to the rest of the truck. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

First I would check the level of PS fluid. Mine was making lots of noise and after changing the fluid it is all good.

Might not be your problem but could be a lot cheaper than tie rod or steering box.

Bad Box

I had several issues with my power steering on my 2000... howl / growl especially when cold. DC ended up replacing the steering box and the pump at 70,000 miles. If you do change, be sure to use synthetic fluid. This seems to hold up better and is much smoother in the cold.
