BAD FUEL MILAGE
BAD FUEL MILAGE
2001 2500 QC 4X4 AUTO 3.54 50,000 MILES. OK, TRUCK HAS BEEN GETTING 15 CITY AND 19 HWY FOR THE FIRST 50,000. LIFT PUMP WENT OUT AND DEALER REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY, 2 WEEKS LATER WENT OUT AGAIN, MADE IT ABOUT 10 MILES THEN HAD TO GET A WRECKER TO TAKE IT TO DEALER. THIS TIME THEY SAID ONE OF THE WIRES TO THE LIFT PUMP CAME LOOSE, BUT WHILE THEY HAD IT THEY REPLACED THE WATER PUMP AND HEAD GASKET(SAID IT WAS LEAKING) DON'T KNOW ABOUT ALL THAT, BUT IT WAS UNDER WARRENTY.COOL. GET THE TRUCK BACK AND 1ST. TANK WAS 10.2 MPG, 1000 MILES LATER 10.2 CITY. ALSO WHEN STARTING THE TRUCK 2 OUT OF ABOUT 5 TIMES IT WONT START THE FIRST TIME YOU TRY, BUT LET OFF THE KEY AND TRY AGAIN AND IT STARTS RIGHT UP. ALSO SEEMS TO BE SURGING JUST A LITTLE WHEN PULLING A TRAILER AT 70 AND GET TO A HILL AND IT DOWN SHIFTS. DEALER SAID NOTHING THEY DID WOULD CAUSE THIS. ANYWAY THEY FLASHED THE COMPUTER. 6000 MILES LATER IT STILL IS GETTING 10.2 CITY OR HWY,TOOK IT MONDAY BACK TO THE DEALER FOR FUEL MILAGE AND START AND SURGING. ANYBODY HAVE ANY THOUGHTS.
Re:BAD FUEL MILAGE
Since your lift pump went out, numerous times, your injection pump is probably gasping it's last breath.
Surging is the magic word to get the VP44 looked at.
Lift pump goes out, it starves the VP44 for fuel, and overworks it since it has to pull it's own fuel.
That's my guess.

Re:BAD FUEL MILAGE
ok, so lets say it is the pump going out. Is there anything that the dealer will do? or does the owner have to wait till the pump goes completely out to get help from the dealer?

Really depends on the particular dealer, and if they are set up to test the VP44 properly, or send it out, or sing and dance till it goes out and leaves you stranded somewhere.
Only way to find out for sure is try.

Re:BAD FUEL MILAGE
I would suspect your reference timing is TU, and you are running retarded. Check for a code from the CKP, although they sometimes fail and do not trigger a code. If not that, then clean the IAT.
If none of those, then I for sure suspect the injection pump ramp is hanging in start mode and will soon fail. Make sure you have tow insurance!
