ARGH! now ive done it...engines knocking????

After whooping up on a chevy ss truck, i went to turn around, and when i had stopped, the engine had a bit of a click to it...not real loud, and no abnormal shake...there isnt anything in the fan shroud, and it seems to "click" with engine rpms...its coming from the rear of the engine, back by #6...I havent taken the valve cover off, i will do that tomorrow...i wonder if it has to do with my heli coiled airhorn bolt coming loose??? hope that heli coil didnt make it into the engine...

^^ you can determine cylinder damage from that? wow.

you dont list what trans you have, you may want to look at flexplate/torque converter bolts, inspection shield bolts, other simpler things before pulling the motor apart.... rich may be right, but there are other things to look at first.

It could also be a injector line clamp. Put your hand on the line and you can feel it knocking if the clamp is loose, then you can find the clamp.

6 spd (5600)...and the injector line would be hitting against others or what would make it make that clicking noise?

well i checked the heli coil, and it was almost ready to fall into the engine...pulled it out, put a new one in...what WAS missing was the corner of the intake manifold inside, which would surround the bottom bolt threads of the airhorn bolt...im wondering if when i tightened the bolt at cummins, it broke off, then entered my engine...the clicking means its still in there??? or its exited, and thats it destruction??? its such a light click, at idle it sounds normal, like just the valves clattering, then with rpms click click click not a knock (i think)... ***!!!

Check the turbo exhaust houseing for the little piece off the intake.
Dealership here found that one. Made a rattling noise like you are describing.

01 was the first year of the pressed in valve seats. The tick from one of them partially dropped wouldn't be much louder than a 24 valve. If you pull the valve cover and check lash a dropped seat would be obvious.

Head has to be pulled and taken to a reputable machine shop to have an oversize one pressed in or a new head from cummins. I went with the new head and it ended up costing 1500 with gaskets.
I could hear mine in the exhaust you could tell a valve was not closing all the way. Easiest way to tell is to check valve lash. It is easy to tell because one valve(most likely on the exhaust side) will have a lot of play. The longer you run it the worse it will get until it breaks the seat apart and the motor eats it. It would do a cylinder and turbo no good. I'm not saying this is it but I like to warn everyone since it happened to me.
