ans. to eng. vibration/ you want to know somthing really scary??

first I'd like to thank all for puting up with the new guy on the block. [All thoe I'm not very new to the planet.]
If you have been following this saga (now night mare) this is the otopsy post mortem.
For starters 3 piston oil coolers found in bottom of oil pan.
Main bngs. look like they have had sand pumped thrue them instead of oil.
Thrust bng. lots of play.
Rod bngs top 1/4 gone wear is deep
no 7 main looks prety bad on the crank.
moral of the story do not ignore a extra noise if it's not suposed to be there
more to come ,.thats as far as i got to day.

Don't understand. Didn't you tell us that the engine idled just fine and had lot's of power? With what you tell us now you must also had low oil pressure.

I would think that the piston cooling nozzles in the pan might have been a large contributing factor.

Wow......sounds like you will now become very intimate with the working internals of a 24Valve Cummins.

Keep a photographic journal......post some pics.
As Shovelhead said, take pictures and keep us posted. Hope this is covered under warranty. Please try and find out exactly what caused this problem. Try and talk to the person doing the repair/overhaul and ask them what caused this. Get an oil analysis as well. Let us know all other problems and damage.
I normally do fairly well in figuring out what is wrong with an engine and on this one I was way out. I need to now why.
Post your replies under this same topic and please don't start a new topic.

to make a long story longer .. cummins here in Renton says if you roll new main bngs in [ like a in frame over haul with the crank still inplace] one can knock the top (botom) off the piston coolers if they are not held in place during the bng roll.
all that said the date code was checked and found to be the same as the rest of the truck (1998) so thats probly not what happend.
I am the third owner of it and do know that it was used to hall cattle.
If it was abused or what ever I wont know till I get the box
(ecm) to the cummins place in Renton so they can peer in to the history.

OK. Keep us posted on the on-going saga. Did anybody ever discover why the bearings were so rough? Did you get an oil analysis done?

Re:ans. to eng. vibration/ you want to know somthing really scary??

what happens if your oil jets jump out for what ever reason?
my therory right now is the mains suffer oil preasure loss cause there is a big whapin whole right next door to them now.
the oil like anything will take the path of least resistance
with the oil jets out of there the mains suffer a greatly redced flow...
Next in line are the rod bngs. now they will not get very much either{ if the oil path is like most other engs.]
thats my opion.
I think the bigest question is why the oil jet [ pistons coolers] decided to go awol ? and how??????

the idea that these real imortant parts are made out of plastic does not excite me alot.

Here we go.... the oil jets were probly never instaled , the guy.........
went to luch or somthing , came back , insalled the crank, and weny on his merry way!!!!
The reason I think this can be said with some degree of certainty is the bottoms are [od] bigger then thr top [s].
one is broken off and awol, 3 were in the pan complete not broken, there is no way it could have got up thrue there w.o. hodenie the magic man (however you spell his name).
the parts that suffered were at the end of the line last rod bng. and last main bng. ..... the rest look pretty normal.
Also there were a whole bunch of machine fillings in the oil jet hole on #7 main bng.
have not started measureing anything yet . been a long day..... [undecided]

Veeeeerrrry interesting. What are you going to do with the crank? Get it ground? Whatever you do, make sure that ALL oil passages have a large diameter wire pushed thru them and then blown out with compressed air.
