ABS/Brake & Rt Turn lights on
ABS/Brake & Rt Turn lights on
We were coming back from LA this afternoon, pulling the hill to Chiriaco Summit (~5 mi of 5%), and the wife downshifted to 3rd, and as expected, the wastegate "slap" occurred. At the same time (coincidence?) the ABS and Brake lights came on, and the Rt turn lamp flickered a couple of times and then stayed on!We were pulling the 5th wheel at the time, so had a fair bit of weight, but nothing we don't do once a month.
We stopped and checked out the situation at the next rest stop, and found that we had no right turn signal, but everything else was OK (we were in the daylight, so didn't check headlights until later). Made it home, unloaded, and when I was taking the trailer back, I noticed the RH headlamp and parking lamp were out. Even stranger, turning on the RH turn signal would flash the LH headlamp! Horn no longer honks when I lock it w/the remote, and couldn't hit it on the steering wheel either.
HELLLLPPPP, Mr Wizard!! I can't see anything that would cause this in my manuals...any suggestions? I've got to come up with a solution or take it (and my wallet, I'm sure) to the dealer for help.
Thanks in adwance for any help!
Mike
Well I've seen the multifunction switch cause some strange probs, but never like yours! Thats about the only componant I can think of that would have to do with the head lights and turn signals. Would have to check it over personnaly to give any real diag. Good luck.
Hey, thanks for the reply - had to go out of town so this is the first time I've had to get back to this.
I found the problem Monday AM, in the light of day. I apparently ran over something, perhaps some time ago, that broke off the bottom portion of the fan shroud. Subsequent to that, the portion of the harness that runs across the bottom of the radiator was loose enough that it got sucked up into the fan at high revs and SHREDDED. Looks like a frame out of a cartoon, must be 20 wires there, all splayed and damaged. AARGH.
The harness is a $1400 item to replace, so I'm going to get in there and splice replacement section, but I'd like to know what it looked like before this event, how it should have been tied down, routed, etc.
Can I trouble someone to take a picture of the bottom of the radiator, showing the harness that runs across there?
Thanks for any help. I'm going to start the work tonight.

Both my ABS light and Emergency break light have been on for months now. I just haven't had it fixed yet.
Any idea what the heck is the problem? My mechanic checked it and got some kind of error (eighty something message.) I forgot what number exactly but I can check my receipt when I get home.
He didn't figure it out and he spent an hour on it, so I'm guessing it's a hard problem to figure out since my diesel mechanic is good.

You may want to do a search on the subject, or start a post of your own...........but since you mentioned it...the most common prob is an open or malfunctioning rear wheel speed sensor. The sensor is located on top of the rear end housing. Ohm it out and see if it's in the 1100-1300 ohm range. Most likely you'll find it open or internally shorted. That would be the first thing I'd check.

Drop spare tire and crawl up there, can't remember socket size, (small 1/2 or 9/16) loosened bolt and could turn sensor, may have to pry it out. Put antisieze on reinstall of new oneYou don't have to drop the spare, it can be accessed easily from the front of the axle.
Replace the VSS/Speedo sensor for $32.00 this has been known to cause both lights to come on.
VSS won't cause any anti lock probs, it would turn on the check eng light.
If you have pre 98 RWAL you can get codes to verify what's wrong. Look under the dash near the steering column. There will be a open black two wire connector with only one terminal in it (don't use the one with two terminals in it.
Little black connector disappeared with the intro of OBDII in 96. The pin for the anti lock is in the 16 way data link connector.
Antknee. Do you have RWAL or 4WAL brake system. Easy way to check is to see if you have wiring running to the front calipers. Most trucks only had the rear wheel system.
Boy we sure hacked this post up.....sorry mike.

You guys have been great help!! As soon as I can get my truck into a garage, I'll fix the KDP and I'll use your suggestions for the ABS and break light problem.
The KDP will have to be checked this week......
