4x4 Vacuum System and Trans leak !!!!!
4x4 Vacuum System and Trans leak !!!!!
Im in need of help...
I have just bought a 1999 Dodge Diesel 4x4 Automatic. I cannot get the front differential to lock in 4-lo or 4-hi.
I have already replaced the valve on top of the transfer case and am wondering what airlines do what going into that valve? There are black, red, green and grey. The red and black run into the vaccuum actuator on the front differential and the grey and green seem to run up to the vaccuum pump. I tracked the grey right into the vaccum line running along the top of the firewall and found the green line just below the rear lifting lug of the motor. The green line was attached to a plastic breather lookin thing. It had no direct connection to a vaccuum line.
Is this supposed to be? Or is it supposed to be connected to a vaccuum source?? I have checked the actuator on the differntial with a vaccuum pump and it seems to engage and disengage.
The problem with the transmission is at the right lower bolt hole between the transmission body and the overdrive unit. At least I think its the overdrive unit. Its between the transmission and the transfercase. It looks like the casting has cracked, not broken completely just cracked all over.
I am trying to figure out if I can remove the overdrive unit from the transmission and transfercase and weld the cracks up. Should I try and take this apart or does it need to be taken apart by a professional??
Thanks all, sorry for the story but I cant afford a new transmission right now.

Nevermind ya'll I found the vaccuum leak...it was the rubber plug that the vaccuum lines run into before they are attached to the mechanical valve on the Transfercase. And the transmission was leaking cuz some numbnut rebuilt it and left out an o-ring somewhere...so says my tranny mechanic.
