Thoughts

The light only tells you the CAD is connected which means the vacuum switch on the transfer case is doing it's job. (I think the 2000 is the same as the ones I have) Make sure the transfer case shifter isn't loose (it has 2 big mounting bolts on the side of the case) like you may be in between 4 high and Neutral or something like that. As mentioned, try 4 low. It sounds like you may have went into or part way into neutral. cd

It works better in 4low but when I accelerate it feels like it is slipping in and out of 2wd and 4X4.

It could be the snap ring in the back have you checked that yet. I have included a drawing in this post. It is #27 if it breaks it will allow the mainshaft to mof back and forth. If you take off part #46 you should see it holding the mainshaft in the bearing. They are only a couple of bucks at the dealer most of them have them on the shelf. I hope this helps.

This one might help as well. It is #31 on this one. Once part #36 is removed then the snap ring can be acessed.

So, does it work better with fluid in the transfer case? If it does, you got EXTREMELY lucky..

I just fixed the same problem in mine today. I had a slip ring on the front output shaft go bad that allowed the chain to move breaking the oilpickup tube. The lowrange neutral shift fork was bad. When I bought the new one at TCE they said running it without oil would cause the problem. It had almost ate through the shift fork. It wasn't a bad job but it took most of the day. on the first pic it is part 37. I paid $40 for it but now it is working.

I had this and it was the yoke from the vacuum pot to the axle. Bent. Needed the whole assembly. I hate this method of 4X4... Would love to have the old manual hubs, but... too expensive to retrofit... Prior to that, it was a weak vacuum pot (ie - years prior).
