2003 4x4 front end trouble

when I turn the steering wheel sharp there is a clunking sound, also when I return the steering wheel back from sharp turns it shakes at slow speeds. today I put it in 4 wheel drive on hard road at slow speeds stayed straight and the wheel shook, took out of 4 wheel and it stopped. I rotated the tires today and no fix. check front wheels for play side to side and also up and down no play. anybody have any answers . truck has 57000 miles thanks kully

I'm sure you did this, just want to check, when you had the truck jacked up, and checked the play in the wheel, did you just rock it by hand? To really get a good measure on the upper and lower ball joints, you need to use a small pipe or something to help really appy some leverage to see how much that joint is rocking if at all.

no just buy hand ,and everthing look very tight.had wheels off took a good look ,saw nothing . but i am not a front end man.if the ball joints were bad would the tires ware bad. truck goes straight with hands off the sterring wheel, also tires are orignal and the ware on them is perfect flat and even tread

The most common problem with clunking is the steering universal located inside the ends of the front axle. Check with your dealer, there should have been a TSB or recall on your truck just for that problem. The issue was frequent failure of the steering joints. There were a number of them assembled without proper lubrication. The symptom you describe fits exactly that problem.

If it does it in 4wd only as you described, it could be loose pinion nut, loose u-joint cap straps, or worn slip yoke or u-joints. With your low miles worn components unlikely though. If in warranty take it in, if not grab hold of driveshaft and shake it, or use small bar between yoke and pry lightly, and visually look for loose attaching components. Sounds like driveshaft and/or 4wd axle related, did dealer do any repairs on these recently? You should also check front diff, and transfer case oil level, and condition(hopefully there is some in both)

I could hear mine in 2 wheel drive when I turned and was way worse in four wheel drive. Yours sounds the same, mine did not make the wheel shake. Thats what I would check. When I change oil once I noticed a rust color around the u joint and it was not long and then it was clicking and snaping.

ok,truck in dealer today front axle u joints, covered under warranty. they said only mopor parts can be put in under warranty.i wanted spicer joints but they will not do. said on the 2500 and 3500 models the hubs rust in very easy .they can not get out with distroy them. so I will get new u joints and will pack with better grease not like the factory does, new automatic hubs , new abs sensor, and they said possible bearings and seals if they can not save them.I am glad they is still a warranty 7/70.have 57000 now.makes you want to think about the new 3/36, not enough. thanks for the help from everbody kully
