2003 with 48re Problem Mechanic Lost

My 03 with 48re has 119,000 miles with no problems. Mostly no tow, highway miles. I had the fluid changed at 95K and checked fluid levels at least 4 times since. Last week, with no warning, I placed it in drive and it felt like the brake was still on. Had to rev to over 2600 rpm to get it rolling, but then it ran normal as long as I did not have to stop again. Taking off is the only problem. It was about 40 degrees out. My local Tran shop said it was taking off in high gear. He said it must have been ran hot, but I don't think so. It WAS two quarts low, so he said change the fluid/filter. I did and drove about 1,000 miles pulling a 3K lb trailer and it was perfect again (Temps in 60s). Today, it started again, and the temp is in the 30s again. Checked the fluid and it was 1 quart low again. EVERYTHING is completely dry underneath. Where is the fluid goin? I added another quart today and it is running fine again. I feel that it could be a sensor except for the missing fluid. I am beginning to suspect my neighbor is stealing my AT fluid! Any Ideas? What makes it run perfect in warm weather and not in cold? Does this action leave a code that can be checked? Any help is appreciated.

whats the temps of the fluid when you check it? hot/cold fluid levels can be more than you think. are you checking it when its in neutral?

I check it in Neutral and after warming the motor to normal operating temps.

not sure if it would matter in your case but just becuase the motor is at operating temp, the tranny could still be cold. if you dont have gauges, i would recommend some so you can see whats going on a little better. if you can see any leaks, the fluid hot/cold level would seem a likely culprit IMO

I bet it is the governor pressure sensor and governor pressure solenoid.

My 01 NEVER threw the GPS codes when mine where bad.
Is this guy checking it with scan tool??

I don't have gauges for the trans temp but the motor temp is at the normal 200-210 area and I have never seen it higher. The mechanic did not put gauges on it while I was there because he thought changing the fluid would fix it. I guess I will have to take it back if it does it again. This morning it ran perfect again (28 degrees out).

I second this. SAme thing happened to me, no codes, just trans screwed. Replaced Gov. Pressure sensor and solenoid and all was well.

My truck would start in 2nd, which sounds like what yours is doing. When I would back out of my driveway and then put it in drive, it would thrust the truck forward hard, and then have a hard time getting rolling.

If your mechanic has a DRB tool, have him watch the trans pressures while he drives the truck around.

I know how frustrating it is, but hang in there...

YOUR DEAD ON! It sounds like you were in the truck with me. I nearly ran over my own mailbox after backing out of the driveway when it leaped forward with my foot between the brake and fuel. I will start checking into that.

....also when you go to take off pull the gear select down to low. It should take off in second instead of third. Scan tool should have been the first thing to be plugged in to monitor gov psi as well as output speed.

good, if your dealer is not backed up and has the parts, they could have you going in an hour. Cost me $500 total, but I was out of warranty. Sensors, labor, fluid equaled up to the $500.

I called the dealer and they have the parts in stock. (Imagine that) They must sell a lot of them. I will get it in there asap.
