Change of plans, I went outside to check the oil for fuel but something came up and now I am too wound up to do it tonight.

I have a really good fuel pressure gauge, but it's not installed! All the stuff is at home.

I thought about turning everything down and driving slow. If it comes to that, I'll probably just take the extra farm truck home for now. I can't risk screwing up this motor too bad.

I wouldn't drive it, we had a customer drive his truck until the oil was puking out of the dipstick tube and it got a new longblock. The issues in those early common rails are either cracked injector cases or the seals.
If the injector was stuck open, you might not make enough pressure to start the truck and if it does start it will smoke.

I drained the oil, and filled up a 5 gallon bucket totally full, mostly diesel fuel I think. I'm pulling the valve cover right now and will check and see how many injectors are bad but that is definitely it. Nobody in Tulsa has any injectors for me so I'm going to order some and do this next weekend, I suppose. Thanks for the help guys and let me know if there is anything else I should know or do. I am going to go ahead and change the oil and start the truck up and let the oil get back in the cylinders, just for about 30 seconds.

Personally, I don't think I'd start it at all until you have the injectors replaced, unless you need to in order to see what's leaking...

Well, I got the valve cover off and couldn't see anything that really stood out. I went ahead and put the new oil and filter on and put the truck back together, and am taking the farm truck home to collect parts and tools, then coming back next weekend to fix it all. Thanks guys for all of your help.

Yeah, good luck. I think you are on the right track by deciding to drive something else while you get parts/tools...

Let us know how it turns out.

Just a quick note.....
Lost 1st injector close to home. Noticed oil was about 2" high on the stick, drove it less than 20 miles to dealer and went thru 7 gallons of fuel and total mess of the truckand found #4 bad. Less than one month later noticed fuel going down rapidly and checked truck and found another injector had failed #6 this time. Again warranty replacement. After talking to many for opinions about possibly damage I am leaning to the fact that I didn't drive it very far and hopefully the fact that diesel has a little lubrication to it (much better than gas) hopefully all is well. The dealer has a way to turn off each injector while running and when the bad on is off fuel sprays out the cover side quite noticably. Don't know how well it shows up with out the DRB tool to turn off or if it sprays out while firing. Hopefully someone can advise you. Otherwise they aren't cheap. Be prepared if you are buying them for some signicifent costs. Have ben told around $600-800 per injector. Hopefully you can find someone to rebuild yours but that will require some turnaround time for getting them built. If you choose to take to the dealer you will (unless you have a mod friendly dealer) will have to remove all mods and hope they don't lkook very hard for them.

Good luck and think you choose the right path not to try driving it home.

Don

I've got a set of Toyo MT's in the shop, ready to go on once I get Don's radius arms installed.

As far as the leak, I "think" I found it. It's interesting to hear about the injectors getting stuck open, though. I will check the oil level right now. The only leak I could find while the truck was running was the FASS fitting on the back of the fuel filter canister. When I originally installed that, I used teflon tape, which is a no-no. I didn't know that at the time and had a small leak at first, but it went away. Apparently, it came back from the dead, months later, on this trip. The leak was not constant, but one big drop of fuel was coming down and hitting the injection pump every 5 seconds. On a four hour drive, I guess it's possible to lose enough fuel to cover everything. I'm thinking there might be another problem, like the injector issue, but at least I got this leak stopped. I'm going to wash the undercarriage real good and check the oil and see what I can find.

No warranty on this truck, I'm about to hit 50,000 miles. I don't like warranty work anyway, I prefer to upgrade instead. Still, I hope that the FASS fitting was the problem so I don't have to spend a ton of money that I don't have to fix the truck. I'll post back up and let you guys know what I find after playing with the truck some more. Thanks for the help and Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! Be sure and watch the Hogs play (and hopefully beat) LSU tomorrow! Woo Pig Sooie!!
i thought warranty on the cummins 1s 5 years or 100,000 miles.. mine was

Hey guys, quick question. With the valve cover off, can I just turn the key to the start position, but not start the truck, so the fuel system primes, and then see which injector is leaking? Or does the truck have to be running for the fuel to pass through the CP3?

Ummmm.... yes and no. I do believe a leaking injector may leak under the lower pressure (not positive). What you will have to do though is pull your injectors to see which one is leaking as it leaks into your cylinder. Somebody on here will chime in and tell you how to pull them without the 'special tool'.

If you are looking to upgrade your injectors, F1 will send you a set and wait till you send the old ones back. This might be your better option since you seem to like more power anyway. Less than 2 bills each.

I am sure by now you have found the turbo does not like the diesel fuel as a lubricant! Mine wiped the turbo in less than 50 miles. You can check it by removing the inlet hose and seeing how much up and down play is in the rotor. Not sure what dcx calls to much but 1/8 (125.) would be my limit.

your motor warranty which includes injectors is 100k also includes turbo i would let the dealer fix it that way if turbo or more is damaged let them pay for it. new short block is about 4k. nobody rebuilds these injectors yet have been checking cuz i got a set that needs it. its not hard to replace the injectors for have done it on my 03. any injector that they want to sell you will require a core charge and yours are not good becuase they are leaking or at least thats what they all tell me. it should take about 3 to 4 hours to replace them if you try it yourself but if you got less then a 100k i would take it to dealer but take the velcro and everything else but gauges off. my .02

You won't have any fuel pressure at the injectors with key on, it will all be bled off and returned to the tank. if you bump the starter though, the CP3 will instantly produce about 900psi rail pressure which will be reduced to 0psi in about 40seconds.

the easiest way to check for leaking injectors is connect the drb and raise the fuel pressure to 3100 lbs, don't stand to close as the leaker can squirt a pretty large stream.
