"03 Ram won't start

i have stock '03 ram 2500 with a 5.9 cummins. it spit and sputtered and died. tried a new fuel filter and it got me a couple of miles back home. then this morning it made a short trip then turned it off. next time i took it out it went less than 1/2 mile and died again. i drained the fuel from the filter cannister and it won't refill the cannisterwhen i turn key on or when cranked. i refilled the cannister and it still won't start. i went to a local mechanic and he said it was probably not a bad pump so i'm lost.i really need some advice soon.

Sounds like the pump is dead. Do you hear the pump run when you turn the key on? If you do look for a crack in the line going to the pump might be that.

haven't heard a peep from the pump on the side of the engine. could it be a bad fuse not letting it run...if so, where is it? i looked in the fuse /relay box and didn't see anything for a fuel pump.

There should be a fuel pump relay

... inside the PDC under the hood proximate to the driver's side fenderwell.

The filter-mounted lift pump is probably toast.

jeezul: My lift pump has not gone yet but with all the posts (100's of them) about it I expect it to go any day. Like was said above, Unless your mechanic got the LP to work, pumped fuel to the housing so it flowed freely from the drain or better yet pressure tested it, I would say your LP is gone.

thanks for the help. i decided to have it towed to the dealer this morning after figuring out the onboard diagnostics. the truck thinks it's the lift pump too and after i called around , the dealer was only about 50 dollars more than every other place locally.hope they find something cheaper than a new lift pump.

Dont forget, if its under 100,000 miles it may still be covered under warranty.
