01 dodge has a bad shaking at Idle.

Hello...
2001 Dodge......has a bad shake at Idle.
Has anyone had this problem....I have owned dodge diesels for years and i have never had this problem before.

We changed the injectors yesterday...because of a miss it had and that took care of that....but know have this problem.

Today we dropped the trans. out thinking this truck had the Dual mass flywheel ..but this truck didn't have that fly wheel on it much to our suprise. So this leaves us scratching our heads..

..........Any help would be greatly APPRECIATED.............

My dad always told me to check the simple things first. Two things I would do is go back and check everything you disconnected to repair the miss. You may have left something loose.

Second, I'd check the motor mounts. Perhaps the miss caused a worn mount to fail. Inlikely but it's something simple you can eleminate.

If you disable the injection system by pulling the relay or unplugging the injector pump, then crank the engine, you will be able to tell if there's a cylinder with low compression, by the sound. Not sure if it is that type of shake or not.

Miss

You know the motor had a miss last week.......and thats why we changed the injectors out....and this sound weird but this took care of the miss but didn't take care of the shake.........the motor sound great and runs great..but after idling down the truck will start to shake more than normal. Its strange never seen this before. I thought of the motor mounts tonight, I will give them a second look tomorrow to see if they are good...because that is what it feels like to me, a bad mount...Thanks.

CLUTCH ASSEMBLY / FLYWHEEL: On vehicles equipped with manual shift transmission check the clutch pressure plate and disc. Verify clutch pressure plate to flywheel bolts and flywheel to crankshaft bolts are tightened to specification. Modular clutch assembly (one piece) used on some models may be out of balance. ITEM 3): ALIGNMENT DOWELS: Verify engine to transmission dowels are installed properly and are not damaged. ITEM 4): HARMONIC BALANCER: Verify harmonic balancer is installed properly and retaining bolt is tightened to specification. ITEM 5): ACCESSORY DRIVE SYSTEM: Evaluate vibration with accessory drive belt removed. Replace suspect component. See list: [A]: Air conditioning compressor. [B]: Water pump. [C]: Generator. [D]: Power steering pump. [E]: Idler Pulley / Tensioner mechanism. ITEM 6): CYLINDER COMBUSTION PRESSURE LEAKAGE TEST: See test procedure in the applicable service manual. This test can identify any cylinder that is leaking which may cause vibration due to cylinder performance imbalance. See list of possible causes for cylinder leakage provided below. Repair as required. [A]: Intake or Exhaust valve leakage. [B]: Piston ring leakage.

Wow, that's an unusual failure! As obvious a cause it could be for that problem, I never would have thought of it because although I am pretty familiar with these trucks, I have never seen one do that. So congrats for finding it before it came off and did some real big damage.

Glad you found your vibration problem, remember to torque bolts to 92 ft lbs. This will prevent any problems down the road. Most likely oil from the puke bottle caused the rubber in dampener to soften. Two ways to check are marks do not align up or if rubber is swollen as in the photo. Just in case you are looking for a used one keep that in mine.

I don't think I've ever seen one fail in just 9 years. I've seen them fail but usually after either 20-30 years of service. I can only imagine there was a casting flaw that failed. I'll bet if you look really close when you remove it, there will be a little bit of rust inside the cracks.

YES Sir, there was a small crack. It was about 1/2 in length....You know a fellow CAN-NOT find used Cummins parts online for these Dodge pick-ups, I think I will start a web-site for USED PARTS for Dodge Pickups(Cummins)..

Since these engines were built to be easily rebuildable, I imagine very few get junked out. When a truck gets stuffed into a tree or other solid object, the balancer is usually wiped out.

I might be able to find one locally as there are several yards around here but it may be almost as expensive as getting a new one.
