Heat Exchanger
Heat Exchanger
For those of you who have had your factory Mccord heat exchanger take a dump (leak), what did you do? I don't think they are available anymore from Dodge? I saw online; that there are quite a few heat exchangers made for marine engines. Would this be a viable alternative? The exchanger on my 93 is rusted through, and needs replacing.
I will have to check the material? The other shell of mine is definitely rusted and leaking! If it's aluminum, then mine could have a stress crack? Is pressure testing under water (with low pressure shop air), the way to check if the coil inside is leaking?
Yes my lobster boat has a tranny cooler hooked to the cooling circuit of the engine. Should be easy to find one but price may make you cry. Anything marine is crazy price. I assume you are talking tranny cooler on side of engine? If not Im lost in space.
The Mopar part number for the transmission heat exchanger was originally 4720 005, which was superceded and changed to part number 4746 216. It doesn't matter; Mopar has discontinued the part and apparently no dealer in the US is still holding one of these units.
However, the Cummins part number is 3924018 and the price is $318.05. Last time I checked Cummins still had about 16 of them in the warehouse.
Good luck.

James,
Thanks for the current Cummin's part # on the heat exchanger. $318.00 is not a bad price, considering I was looking at marine diesel exchangers - in the $600 range (I know what you mean Richie)!!!! Truckerdee, thanks for that link! A local truck shop came up with a Hino diesel exchanger, which looks like it will work. Thanks again all for the help!

James or anyone else,
I went to this web site http://tinyurl.com/4l54eo and punched in the Cummin's part number, 3924018 for the heat exchanger. The site came up with a part listed as clr/oil for $243.80. Is this the correct part (heat exchanger)??? I can't seem to navigate the official Cummin's site, as I do not have my engine serial # on hand.

3924018 is the new Cummins p/n on QuickServe but I could not get any info to show on it, no price either. Even the old number 3914759 doesn't give pricing and shows factory part status at checkout.
You can telephone Cummins Power South here in Atlanta at 404-763-0151. The "factory" currently has eight (8) units in stock and, for individuals without a corporate account, the price is $318.05 plus shipping (as of May 20, 2008).
Cheers,
