Goodbye Amsoil EA, too restrictive. What's next?

You probably remember this post from a couple of months ago:

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=229386

Upon the advice of several DTR members, and the claims on Amsoil's website about better airflow than paper filters, I decided to go with an Amsoil EA.

Well, I immediately noticed a drop in power and mpgs. Egts went up though . I checked just a couple of days after installation and the filter minder was sucked ALL THE WAY DOWN! Well, I had enough and finally ran a series of filter minder tests: the EA vs. a dirty old paper filter I'd saved from before my S&B install. The dirty filter won.

I documented it and sent it to Amsoil along with the filter. They reported that nothing was wrong with the filter but would replace it under warranty anyway (since I pointed out that their website claimed better airflow and I had proof that was not the case). Amsoil was really good to work with, I have no beef with them and they did the right thing. Now the technical guys just need to talk to the marketing guys about removing the "better flow than cellulose" claim from their literature.

Here's the video I made (long and boring):

I'm not really interested in slamming Amsoil- like I said they worked with me and a lot of people attest to their products. I just want to share the video with you guys and then I'll take it down from the web.

But, I really don't know how you guys with Amsoil EA air filters are even getting by. I'm making far less power (thus requiring less airflow) than most of you.

My advice: Do your engine a favor and toss it now!

Oh, and I'm either going to get a drop-in AFE dry set-up or do the rebate thing and wait for the new S&B dry intake system someone on here mentioned (hate to be a guinea pig though).

That's pretty bad that it was within spec, yet it clearly failed in field use.

Thanks for posting this.

I just got my AFE 7 superstock filter from Geno's today, so I'll test it and report anything out of the ordinary.

Thanks again!

My Amsoil filter did the same thing to my filter minder as soon as I installed it. It didn't pull it down all the way, but it was a noticeable change and I even reset the minder to check it on several occasions.

I then bought either an AEM of AFE three dimensional dry filter that I have in my truck now. I'm not sure which brand it is, as I bought it off of a guy on here, but it's all black. The filter minder hasn't moved since I installed it, but then again, I remember another member recently remarking that he had removed his dry filter because he had visible dust/residue along his intake tube, that hadn't been there before.

So while the other dry filters may flow better, it may not necessarily be a "better" filter.

Although I had planned to check for residue in my intake tube, I haven't checked it since I installed the new filter, so thanks for reminding me to do just that!!

I think the filter sucked down so fast due to you not wearing a seat belt

Holy mother of pearl that suckers load compared to my 06. Now that I know how to check the filterminder, I'm gonna check it out on my truck. I wonder if that's why my mileage has seemed pretty poor.

p.s. I spy cardboard in the grill, warm weather is coming don't forget to pull that soon!

SOhappy, ive got the AFE superstock prodry s and its awesome! because of the design, theres alot more filter surface area than a flat panel. my filter minder doesnt move at all even towing my 40ft toyhauler. i didnt see if u have swisscheesed your airbox, if not u should consider it. that helps alot also.

I want to thank you for posting this, because I was going to pick up that very same filter from a local Amsoil dealer in SEVA. Definitely not spending the money on that. What amazes me is I am at 42k miles with the stock filter and the filter minder hasn't moved hardly at all.

what about the ****** whistler intake? i have a homemade one and it incoorporates the amsoil EAAU6080 conical shaped filter. I wonder if the same holds true about your filter vs this cone one? because i suffer from high egt syndrome as well

I think your dropped valve and burnt piston caused your high egt's!

I noticed no difference with mine. BUT -- as it clogged too soon with the superfine limestone dust I have to get into -- I simply adapted a change into my OCI of 6-mos/6,000-miles and now change the oil, oil filter, air filter and fuel filter all at once. I'm surprised I didn't do it this way from the beginning, but it makes life easy. A local supplier carries what I need in the way of all Fleetguard filters.

I wish that everyone would try the S&B. It only seems a handfull of people on here use it. I have tried AFE, Amsoil, Stock, and S&B. I have to be honest, the filter minder never moves and thier customer service can't be beat. After putting on about 6,000 miles of hunting Antelope on nothing but dry dusty Montana dirt roads, there wasn't even the slightest film of dust in my intake tube. This thing works great. Try it and don't look back. I know that the oiling causes people not to use it, but it only takes a few minutes. s

Quick question, did you gently pull the foam off of the bottom of the filter before you installed it? I haven't seen a problem if you remove the foam, but with it it is restrictive. +1 on the swiss cheese. Or just do the homemade willie whistler, I did.

You guys need to read this... I know it's a comparison of Duramax filters, but its the only ISO test independent air filter comparison I've ever seen.

http://www.duramax-diesel.com/spicer/index.htm

Basically, when clean all the performance filters flowed slightly better than AC Delco paper filter. Throw a little dirt in the stream, though, and the AC Delco flowed better.

The Paper filter also held 3x as much dirt before it reached the limit of what the machine could pull 350 cfm through compaired to K&N.

What really got me, though, was that the gause filter can let 18 times as much dirt through as the AC Delco...

Did you do the airbox mod? I could pull the filter minder down to 100% with a brand new filter. After the airbox mod no more issues.

The reason I ask is I have no issues with the EA189. 20k miles without cleaning so far and the filter minder is sitting at 75%.
