I have been putting some serious thought in to picking up a first gen to build a beast for some serious 4 x 4 & hunting truck. Something that will be mean as hell & it wont really pick at my soul if I put a few scratches in it.

I'm leaning toward the 2nd gen body with a 12v... but a 1st gen body's not out of the question. I need my truck through the end of the month for moving my granddad to a new place... don't have any big trips planned for awhile... so maybe I'll get serious about doing this come March.

This is kinda cool... I've helped cut up Jeeps, Toyotas and assortments of offroad rigs... axle swaps, drive train swaps and upgrades... built roll cages etc. Rebuilt and customized trailers and an RV or two. Never done it to the tow rig/DD.

And yes... Debt is evil... I'm in the process of hunting it down, killing it, and strapping it to my hood.

allll righty... ad is posted...

As I was polishing her up last night... I had second thoughts on the sale... then I went and looked up what my sum of payments would be over the next three years I lost all those second thoughts

Now... what to buy if this thing sells... the big IF. Luckily, I've got a street bike to ride in between trucks.

Fortunately my truck is paid for, the payments I have on construction equipment and rental properties more or less pay themselves.
I do have a payment on the wife's ride though.
I also have a hobby buying and selling 1 ton trucks.
Last year, I get a call that a friend of a friend has a nice 1 ton Chevy in his yard that could be had fairly cheap.
I get there and I am a little dissapointed because it's an 82, hoping for something newer, fuel injected.
I start looking it over and find it has no rust, rot, and has A/C, and it's a factory camper special truck, 350, 4sp manual.
To make a long story short, the truck has been totally gone through.
New, doors, fenders, hood, inner fenders, carpet, springs, tires, brakes, exhaust, carb, and freshened up the 350.
Definitely a project that got out of hand.
Now don't hate me for this, but I love driving this truck, it's old school.
In my opinion it drives down the road just as good as my 97 CTD.
It's simple, reliable, and if it breaks, parts are cheap and readily available.
I installed a pto, and a dump body, and if I get on a job and need a couple of yards of something, I just say, "I'll be back, I,m gonna go get the old Chevy."
I have a few friends who think I'm crazy for putting all that time and effort into a 2wd 82 truck, but once they drive it, their opinion usually changes.

The point of this story, if it's what you want, do it.
Too many people I know have wanted to do things for years and still have not done them.
That's really not living life to the fullest.

Step One... accomplished. My '03 has a new owner today.

I am officially without a Diesel... without a truck for that matter.

And... best of all... without a big monthly payment.

Now, the fun begins. Time to lurke the classifieds.

I would like to find an older 1st gen too, but since my 03 CTD is my only vehicle, I cant stand to be out of a vehicle for any more than a day. I DO NOT like the payments though, makes it hard to go to college and also work full time. Looks like this summer I may pick up a side job, to get ahead on the payments by a couple of grand.

Thump, how many miles did your 03 have on it when you sold it? Can you pm me the price you got for it? Just interested, in case I decide to sell mine one day.

GH, sent ya a PM.

I've got a motorcycle to get me by for now... just need to figure out what range of trucks (year, motor etc.) to narrow my search down to and start shopping for a bargain.

So if ya'll were in my shoes... starting from scratch... what would you be looking for.

Keep in mind, I've got a 32 ft gooseneck with a camper on the front and a Jeep on the back... sometimes need the 4x4 to get it out of where it's parked etc. See my gallery for a photo of said Stappin'Cabin Redneck hotel on wheels.

Edit, here's how I was setup with the bling-bling CTD:

I am with you, I "new" truck is a 98 12 valve, now all I have to do is sell the 98.5 24 valve. My wife wants an SRT8, but I am tired of losing my "rear" on these new cars. So for me from now onit is one or two year old cars.
