will a cummins run upside down?

well, will it? and if it will, how long is safe? 3 minutes? 10 minutes? like if I roll my truck over and need to keep the engine running to use my winch. also will it start upside down?

thanks

The oil pump probably will starve upside down. Bye-bye engine.

If you had a dry sump oiling system and a giant oil reserve tank you could run it upside down until the windage weight (suspended oil) or a dry tank shut her down.

sure i try to run mine upside down at least once an oil change.

Just joking, i don't think it would be something that you would want to let happen.

If I rolled my truck over, the last thing I would worry about is using the winch. Now spilling my Big Gulp all over the interior, that would be a problem.

yea id say it run upside down but itd be like runnin it with no oil. well then again then unless you had a full tank of fuel the fuel pump would get starved after a time, i think, not sure where the gas tank pump is.

the engine would start and run, but the lube system would not function... if you really fear this roll over thing, just get a pair of BIG batteries and run your winch off them...

About twenty years ago I saw a big rig that had a cummins mouted sideways below the frame. What I mean is 90 degrees to the side.

Make sure you get the ones with sealed vents or better yet, Optma's or all of the acid would gurgle out when you did your big 180.

I've seen city transit buses (built in Europe) that had a 6cyl Cummins laying on its side. The Cummins was the best part of the entire bus.

I would be weary about anything more than 45degrees out of it's normal position. While it's no problem to build an engine to run at 90 degrees, the stock oil system won't work. A shurefire sign of troubles coming is no oil pressure. For offroading a good electrical winch and non-spill batteries are the way to go.
