Why hotrod a diesel??

OK, first off, I am not trying to start any trouble!! I just have to ask. I have been doing a lot of reading here in the 3rd gen hi-performance area, and see the incredible amounts of time and money that people spend on their trucks. It seems the fastest trucks are in the lo 12's, which seriously isn't really that quick when talking drag racing. So what's the attraction? Why not a Vette, or Camaro which with the same money would probably put you in the 9 sec range. I know you can't pull your boat, haul logs, etc with a Vette, But it seems like so much $$$ for not that much speed. And yes, I have owned both a 10 second Chevelle and a 11 sec flat Buick GN, so I do know what I'm talking about. I hope you guys don't take this the wrong way and think I am dumping on diesel trucks, not so! I just want to know why you picked this vehicle as your hotrod.

If diesel is what runs through your veins it just comes natural. Also there are diesels that are in the 9's. If you think about it there are guys here in 7,500 pound trucks beating Vipers and vetts in the 1/4. Diesel performace has only scratched the surface, there well be bigger and better in the future.

It is alot more Challenging, taking a 7000LB truck with a 1000LB 6 cylinder inline engine is a pretty good feat IMO. Ontop of that , it's a little different , people have been racing cars at the track forever , It would get kinda boring if everyone showed up with a vette , and everyone had the same stuff bolted onto it.... It Attracts alot of attention when a 1 ton dually takes a mustang , or a 3/4 extended cab beats a viper , stuff like that

Wouldn't it be nice to have some guy in a vette pull up next to you and rev his engine thinking "i'm gonna whoop this heavy truck" just to see that truck billow black smoke and take off faster than a rocket? I think it would. Then after you have your fast truck. Make a 9sec camaro and have the best of both worlds.

Its the great sense of satisfaction you get when you pull up to a light and a punk kid in a rice racer thinks he's gonna show the cowboy in his big diesel truck how fast he is, and instead gets covered in black smoke and gets his butt left at the stop light wondering what just happened??

Because it's cool to drive to the track with your trailer, unhook and run 12's, hook the trailer back up and drive back home. Let me see your chevelle do that. It's not about the speed and the times. It's about taking something designed to work and that's god awfully heavy and running times that vipers and vette's are only supposed to run. Ever seen the look on a vette's face when your neck and neck with them doing 100mph.

Yeah, Ya know, I bet it really seems like you are really flying being that high off the ground in a truck. I am riding the fence on modding my truck, or starting another car project. The $3500-$4000 billet trans is the killer!

Anyone can go by a vette and run 12's, but who is gonna expect a diesel to get out there and do the same and we also have to put work into our vehicles to make them go fast, not just write a check. I happen to think anything in the 12 sec range is really respectable.

I didnt mean to go there. Alright I did. But, I have been fixing up a 64 chevy truck for a while now and am seriously thinking about selling it and just playing with the diesel, or selling the engine and upgrading.

That's what i am doing this summer, I will be towing my friends AWD turboed DSM to the track , and maybe run my own rig a little.

I want to be able to run 12's eventually , street driven , with as little smoke as possible , The smoke is fun and all , but it sure can attract the WRONG kind of attention (insert blue and red flashing lights here)

The $4200 I spent on the trans is the best mod I've done to date. It's SOOOO much nicer to drive now.

And yeah, 12's in a lifted truck is stupid fast. And we also do it because we are rednecks.
