Because nobody wants to have a refinery in their town. Also a lot oil here is refined in other countries and the gulf is a major shipping point. You can thank your tree hugging i dont want to look at people for such few refineries

Buildem in ND, no one here to care.

Not sure why people whine about the price. Its a free market system, they charge what they want, you decide if you want to buy it, always other alternatives.

I read the first 2 pages and am surprised not a single person mentioned even one of the 3 real reasons the fuel prices are going up again.

1. The Federal Reserve (is not the government, but private banks formed into a central bank). Think of them as the crack dealer and the government as the crack addict. Somehow we got swindled into the system of borrowing money that was made from no where, then paying interest on that money. Then, we work our whole lives to give that money back in the form of taxes.
They are essentially printing $ to support the out of control government and to avoid it from defaulting - the more of something out there, the less valuable it is.

2. Our government,. All problems can be traced back to this starting point. They are the reason, the why, the how come, the real problem. It is broken.

3. The world investors need to make $, they are currently buying commodities b/c the currency game/lie we have been forced fed is almost over. Also, the stock market is too volatile with the economies of the world collapsing - so that leaves buying commodities. If you were rich, would you buy oil? Yep.

So, instead of bitching and moaning about it and adding to the problem - why not invest in commodities yourself and take an active role in voting in people who will disband the EPA and other overly zealous agencies. Let them start easing restrictions on emissions and other regulations, actually encourage business, and not bad mouth and excessively tax oil companies more than other corporations earning the same profits. Those taxes and fines get passed on to the end consumer - you and me. Obama is letting Brazil drill off our coast while not allowing US companies to do it driving costs up even more. Ask yourself why and you will figure out there is more to it than the media tells you. All lies - they are in on it too. Feed them cake and entertainment and educate them to the level of the dumbest kid in class (no child left behind) and you have a recipe for continuous power.

Also....The dollar is going down the crapper FAST - oil is purchased from overseas b/c of gov won't let businesses here do it. This oil is purchased with US dollars which are worth less big time. Have you noticed inflation?

Look at Congress and Senate members net worth before and after office. They don't make THAT much money. What gives? Insider trading an other illegal activity that's what.

Its amazing how diesel is 60 cents a gallon more than regualr over here. Always thought there was more of a refinery process for gasoline than there is for #1 and #2 fuel oil. Its all a joke.

At our local station, gas just dropped to $2.96, diesel is still at $3.76. I saw $3.90+ heading south on I-35 last weekend.

Easy answer, labour shortages and high costs...we dont have enough people where the oil is now.

In what way?
Compared to other world currencies the value of the dollar has been increasing in the past few months.

In regards to the money supply versus real output. Comparing it to other monetary units was best described by the following comment, "The Dollar is the best looking nag at the glue factory".

By my reckoning, all the complaints directed at oil companies are foolhardy. They are rooted in economic ignorance (and emotion).

Prices serve the very valuable function of allocating distribution of supply. If we want more, the higher price communicates that need and we end up with more supply.

Every time a major storm goes through the gulf coast, we all hear about storm victims being "gouged" by people taking advantage of fuel shortages. People from out of state drive down to sell their fuel purchased elsewhere for 50% or more over the going rate.

To someone who understands economics, this is beautiful. Why? Because the higher price drives supply to meet the need for fuel. What if the gov't stepped in and kept people from charging a high price? There would then be no incentive to buy fuel elsewhere and take it to the place where it's needed. The result is a shortage of fuel for those who need it most (storm victims).

If you are a storm victim, would you rather have gas for $8/gal, or have no gas at all?

Likewise, look at higher fuel prices here as insurance that we will still have fuel to use.

If Washington was serious about lower prices, it would have long ago:
1) Lifted the ban on offshore drilling
2) Approved the Keystone XL pipeline (which was just punted until after the 2012 election)
3) Stop running up huge deficits that weaken the dollar and drive up commodity prices.

But they're not serious. They no that *they* will never suffer. Only us.
Great post Hohn, you should give economics lesson's. Everyone wants to blame the oil companies. The Government makes way more per gallon than the refineries do. they also help kep the cost of oil high, by behaving bad as you stated . Anwar, Keystone Pipeline and Offshore drilling are perfect examples.

Recently the oil refinery here in Yorktown Va. closed down. The word from several of the layed off workers is that the owners "Giant", can buy already refined products cheeper overseas and ship them here. It's hard to believe but, there is a refinery here idle.

Margins with the east coast pocket refineries is pretty slim (or none). Even Sunoco is thinking about getting out of the refinery business.
