Where can I find a diesel 4, 5, or 6 cyl to power a jeep like vehicle?
Gentlemen,
I'm looking for a small powerplant for a toyota landcruiser. A friend is thinking of selling his and I'm researching engine replacements. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 150 hp and 180 ft/lbs of torque. If you have a solution please let me know. Also let me know if there are turbo's available because fuel economy is a factor as well. Looking for better than 25mpg. I'm going to mate it to a gm 5 speed tranny nv4500. Also if the engine was in a production vehicle I'd like that info if you can as I'll be hunting for a donor vehicle as good diesel engines are really expensive. Thanks for your time in this matter guys.

I think a Cummins 4BT would fit the bill nicely. Its the 4 cylinder version of the 5.9L 6 cylinder that goes in the Rams. It wieghs about the same as a big block V8 and gives out good power. It gets good mileage and you can turbo it if it doesn't already have one.
There is a good source of them if you have a frito-lay (the tater chip guys) center near you. A lot of their delivery vehicles used a 4BT mated with a TH400 auto tranny.

I seen a jeep a few years back a guy was driving with a diesel in it that was a factory install . He purchased it in England and it was shipped over , the drive train looked beefier to me and it had quite a nice rattle to it . The only problem I could see was the steering wheel was on the wrong side but I would think that motor would be the one you would want to find . I did not ask who made the motor for jeep and wish now I had now , but I would think you could do a little searching and find out . When I seen it I wanted one , the guy did say it was a little slow on the highway but loved it around town , I have never seen another one .
Look in my gallery. Its a diesel Land Cruiser. It's stock, but you may like it anyways. Or go here: http://www.panamoffroad.com/mauve/

They currently have a bunch of used delivery trucks up for auction and many of them have the 4BT.

I'd go with a 4BT but I've seen quite a few guys running "NA" and turbo VW diesels in sami's and jeeps....but whatever you decide make sure you do some homework on the motor, you don't want to end up with something that is very hard to find parts for....
