I think the best year is an 05. they are about the best to mod and I think they are the one of the best looking trucks out there. I really think you are on the right track with either a 97 or I would shoot for an 04.5-06. my 05 was a good truck

I'd find a third gen, under 100K miles if you can.
Can't speak much for second gens since I really don't know much about them.
I think first gen is just too outdated like the horse and buggy (at least that's how they ride
) and are becoming collectable and reflect that in price.
