I dont really know what ur prob is zig. Ive got a 05' 2500 with 4:11 gears and 35" tires and i can get 17-20mpg. 16 if i drive crazy.
Every truck is different. In my 05 I couldn't average 16mpg if I was driving downhill both ways. It was completely stock and out of the range of the TSB.

But like I said before... I got rid of mine for many more reasons than just fuel mileage. And I shopped around for a long time before I found a dealer willing to give me a fair trade in. In the end, I didn't take much of a hit on my truck.

Why dont you look around for a 1st generation or late 2nd generation truck owner who wants to drive something new. Get him/her to trade and give you some boot. I love my 2002, I get 21.8mpg @ 70mph on the interstate, about 17mpg mixed city driving, and have got as much as 25.5mpg on the interstate at 58mph. But, if I had it to do over, I would look for a 97 or 98 clubcab 1st gen. just so I could run WVO and not have this cursed fuel injection pump.

Whatever you do...... Dont get rid of your cummins! You are driving the best diesel engine there is.

Zig... Do what makes you feel best!

I feel we have some info missing. Is you 05 a 4x4? Automatic?..... makes a big difference!

I think your best mileage would be had with a 2002, manual tranny, 3.55 rear end, 2x4, Long bed....with over 40,000 miles on it. With some add on's you should see over 20 mpg on hwy!

Just my 2 cents but I wouldn't even think of getting rid of your truck, wait for it to get broke in and follow some of the other suggestions made and go with an intake small chip and exhaust and your economy will come up, I've seen it happen many time before. I have a family friend who owns an 05 with 20,000 miles on it with only a chip exhaust and intake. He gained almost 4 mpg after he went on a trip to alaska pulling a 13K camper. be patienent, it will pay off.

Zig; if you drive 20,000 miles a year you will spend about $4384 on fuel if you get 13 mpg and pay $2.85 per gallon for diesel. If you get a truck that gets 20 mpg you will pay $2850 per year a savings of $1534 per year. It will take you 7.8 years just to breakeven on the $12000 that you will be losing by trading. Plus if your truck gets broken in and picks up the mileage to about 15 mpg it will take 20 years to breakeven on the 12000 dollars. Dont cut off you nose to spite your face. just my opinion. good luck

I was looking at used trucks today and found an 03 4x4 SLT Diesel 6spd loaded with only 40000 miles on it. It was traded off by a local person that trades every 3 years. There isn't a scratch on it. Has a nice heavy duty chrome push guard on front and has a hideaball gooseneck hitch in the bed. Chrome bed rails and extra chrome on the sides. The owner really dressed this truck up. Had a record to show his fuel milage when he went on trips and this truck was averaging about 20 mpg. My truck is an 05 SL 4x4, automatic, no electric windows or locks, plain not much chrome and averaging 11 miles per gallon. They said they would trade me straight accross. I am going to take it out tomorrow and put a couple hundred miles on it and if it is getting 20 mpg I am going to trade. I checked Nada and the values are pretty close. I know I am losing 2 years but I believe I would be happier with the 03.

Zig, you never mentioned before that your '05 truck is an ST without power windows or locks. Since you have kids it makes sense to get an SLT for those conveniences. The '03 6-speeds are nice and this truck is broken-in at 40k. If it has 3.73 gears (data tag inside glovebox) you will be much closer the mileage you want, although still not 24-26mpg. I'd say go for it. Good luck!

Let us know how it turns out. Since they will trade you straight across, that is taking a lot of the hit of the 12k away...

Sounds like mine- I've got a duallie and I still get 17 around town.

Zig- air up your tires, use some fuel additive, and bump the timing before trading in the truck and taking a big hit =P

My closest town is 60 miles away and the closest major city is Billings Montana and it is 150 miles from us. We love where we live so we have to watch the money we spend if we want to live here. We have always had an economy car for the kids to go back and forth to school each day. It is 120 miles round trip for them. I still have one child at home and I bought her a Dodge Neon to go to school in that gets 32 miles a gallon. I am looking at buying my wife a new Volkswagen Jetta diesel that supposedly gets 48 miles per gallon. I hope I am not being lied to about that. I am paying almost $8,000.00 more for the Jetta to hopefully get an extra 10 to 16 miles per gallon. I would also hope that the diesel engine in the Jetta would outlast the gas engines. I have driven an old 2wd 84 ford one ton 6.9 liter diesel since it was new. It got me 21 miles to the gallon the day I drove it home. It was the best truck I ever owned. I should have never traded it off but my wife and kids would laugh at me running around in my old clunker and it would embarrass them to be seen in it. I know, I should have traded off my wife and kids.
It is not just the fact of loosing $12,000.00 on this truck. I didn’t get what I wanted! I could have bought another ford but I heard that they were only getting around 15 mpg, the same with a Chevy. The reason I went with dodge was because of the fuel mileage.
Now, every time I pull up to a pump it reminds me how I was lied to. Fuel mileage is very important to me and I want to like the vehicle I am driving if I am going to spend a lot of time in it as we do. My new dodge would have had a lot more miles on it had it gotten better fuel mileage. I didn’t buy it to just look at.
I have taken it back to the dealer 3 times for this fuel problem and they always tell me the same thing, it is getting the best it can get. I did get a “reflash” of the ECM and the next tank of fuel I got 8.5 miles per gallon. I took it in again and they reflashed it and it went back to where it was before. Like I said, they said their computer says my truck is averaging 11 miles to the gallon since new.
I know that I am taking it in the shorts by getting rid of it now but everyone that buys a new truck like this looses 10 grand when they drive it off the lot. The first year you take the biggest beating.
Do I spend a couple more grand to get a new exhaust system and a new air filter that will allow more airflow and a new chip for the computer? How much will it add to my 11 miles per gal? I noticed my right rear quarter panel and bumper gets black smoke on it. I pointed it out to my dealer and they said it was normal. I haven’t noticed it on other new trucks, which makes me think it is running rich. They also blame that the winter blend will cause bad fuel mileage, I’ve talked to others that say it only effects them maybe 1 to 2 miles per gal.
I live 80 miles from the dealership, add it up, at $3.00 per gallon getting 11 mpg it cost me almost $48.00 to take it to them round trip to see why I am getting poor fuel mileage. If it were getting what they told me it would get I would only be paying $24.00. I have already turned it back to them but we are both waiting on me to decide what I want to do with it. They also own a ford franchise and they said that I could trade it on a new ford. I don’t want a new ford if it’s only going to get 15 mpg. I want 20 like so many people brag about and like I once got with my 6.5. Maybe I should wait until they get a good used 01,02 or 03 in and trade down. The truck I purchased is a 4x4 and I really don’t need a 4x4 so maybe I should go back to a 2x4 if it gets better mileage. I originally wanted a 2x4 but they didn’t have one on the lot and they told me I wouldn’t save that much in mileage. They also convinced me that I wouldn’t save much weather I went with an automatic over a stick. I believe I should look for exactly what I wanted in the first place, that is a 2x4 with a stick and highway gears.
Am I thinking wrong? It cost me almost $100.00 to fill my truck, I look at that and I think, had I purchased the right truck it would have cost me half this much to go this far!
I know I sound confused, that is why I am hear.
Hey on your decision to buy the vw jetta diesel would be a good idea!! my dad owns one and is pulling on average 52 mpg(mostly freeway going about 65 mph with some around town driving) it is amazing little car!! he drives about 40 miles one way to work everyday and with out that car his job would be a whole different story!! Highly recommended. Ive also heard of and seem some vw jetta diesels that have around 300000 to 400000 on them im not sure what all of the details on these jettas are but there supposidly out there. good luck whatever you do. My friend has a 1992 cummins (smokin92) and with his foot in it a lot with a few mods , he gets around 18 i believe.

I took that 03 out for a test drive. I filled the tank, drove it 60 miles, went back to the service station and filled it up again and I could only get it to take 1.9 gallons. I bought the truck. I can't believe it, that is 30 miles to the gallon. Do you think this truck may have one of those chips in it? None of these trucks got this kind of mileage from the factory did they? I was watching the overhead fuel monitor and when I had the cruze set at 1800 rpms it said I was getting 25 miles per gallon. I figured by the time I divided the miles by the gallons I would end up with less than that but I got more. This was a flat run that I did, not much up or down hills. Is this normal for the 03? This is what I wanted. I hope the mileage stays like that. I also purchased an extended warrenty on it. Cost me $2500.00 for an extra 4 years bumper to bumper or 48,000 miles witchever comes first. The only thing it dosn't cover is the clutch. I hope that was a good deal. This truck still had a little warrenty left on it but I figured I was loosing all that warrenty I had left on my 05 that I had better add some to this one.

Zig the 03 and 04 do get better mileage, no doubt about it. But filling a tank to the same spot leaves a great margin of error on such a short test drive. My rig easily does low twenties highway. Sounds like you really know how to drive for mileage which is easier said than done. Did you notice what diff ratio was in it. By the way, on the valve cover information decal, at the back is a CPL# . I've got a issue of Diesel power magazine that translates that number in good info when buying a used truck. Sorry to say it but my opinion on extended warranties are poor. So it sounds that you bought it?
