What year did CTD become "quiet"?

Now that I'm ready to buy one, I remember them getting quieter all of a sudden. Was that with the 3rd gen in 2003? Have they progressively gotten more quiet as the years go by? The noise has always been the road-block with my wife (the cost for a new one is my problem) and now that I'm ready I can't remember.

I know it's probably a subjective matter, but I'd love some opinions.

3rd gen common rail was it. the added injection events made the combustion process 'softer', thus reducing the 'rattle' that we've come to know and love. The 98-02 24v's were the loudest, followed by the 94-97 12v's. Stock 89-93 12v's are generally the quietest, (save for the 3rd gens) except for the odd 94-97 12v with severely slipped timing.

She wouldn't like my Gen. 3 truck. I've done what I can to make it louder.

Thanks. I did a quick search here, but it's hard to know what words to use.
My buddy has an 03, but now has a new turbo, straight exh. etc. and it's loud as ever, so he confuses me.
Thanks for the info!
I'm lookin for a QCSB auto 4x4 with leather seats. not lifted. shouldn't be so hard right?

yea, exactly. As long as it starts out quiet, then I can get it. That way I can ease her into the black smoke, noise, and power that I love. it will be a gradual thing.

Yeah, don't worry about that. Bought the '07 with a smoky Bullydog programmer, then got the die grinder out and surgically removed the muffler.......and it's her truck!

I can barely have a conversation without shouting when standing around my '02 when idling. I love it!

I love having the best of both worlds!!! My 04 and my 92 trucks! I'll drive them both until the wheels fall off, put more on and keep on going...

My wife and I grew tired of using sign language to converse in my old '98.5. This '07 5.9 is a blessing and I've opened up the exhaust some with a Shuttleworth diesel muffler.
