The gen 2 24-valves came in at about the '98 and a 1/2 model year.

Well, Scott, the 12 valve engines were used from the beginning (1989?) up to 1998.5 when Cummins switched to the 24 valve engine, which is electronically controled. The 2003 engines are still 24 valve, but have other refinements, such as common rail injection. I hope that this answers your question. If you are looking at a 98 Dodge diesel, make sure which engine you have in that truck, because the switch to 24v happened mid-model year.

Good luck in your search.

I'm not trying to start anything but to me the only thing you gain with the 24-valves is about 1 to 2 mpg better fuel mileage. You may get more power but not much, probibly no more than 5hp.

With the 24v you also have a higher highway speed without the high rpm. You also dont have to adjust the valves as often. Had both prefer the 24v.
