box, does it have a shaft coming out the other end, farther than the compressor wheel?
the emd 645 loco engines had a strange turbo like that, it was mechanically assisted with an overrunning clutch.

That looks like the exhaust housing with multiple inlets and a single outlet.

Think of it like this: take a ford powerstroke. V8 engine with a single inlet turbo. There is a Y-pipe (collector) that brings the exhaust of both left and right manifolds together BEFORE going to the turbo.

That big one pictured above, looks like it eliminates the collector (Y-pipe). Probably bolts to both exhaust manifolds on a very large V configuration diesel engine.
