What is the Difference between Gen #2 and Gen #3

I was wondering what the differences were between the Gen 2 and Gen 3 engines. I was also wondering when they went from having the lift pump on the side of the fuel filter to when they put it in the tank.

2nd gen engine:
12V with a P7100 mechanical injection pump
-KDP is a known issue
-Lift pump is a mechanical piston style located on the driver's side of the block
-About as reliable as you can get
-Signature 12V sound
-Easy and cheap to bomb and get power out of

2nd gen engine:
-24 valve with a VP44 injection pump
-Louder (some like it, some don't, to each their own)
- Lift pump is on the side of the engine I believe, 2nd gen guys correct me if I'm wrong
-Potential for the 53 block issue

3rd gen engine:
-24 valve with a HPCR fuel injection system
-Quieter than a 2nd gen, early CR trucks have 2 injection events, 04.5'-07' have 3
-3rd gens can take more boost with stock headbolts and gaskets (or so I've been told)
- Dodge did a recall to relocate the lift pump from the filter to the tank in 04 or 05'

I'm sure theres more differences between the three like the blocks, pistons, rods etc.

Some 24v's got the intank lift pump as remedy and as a requirement to get a VP44 under warranty. So its hit and miss if the 24v has an intank pump or a block mounted pump. KDP is also an issue for the 24v's, just not as widely publicized as the 12v's.
