Re:VW TDI

I have a 2001 jetta tdi. It has 40000mi and no problems. It doesn't get the 50+mpg that I hear other people getting but it's atleat 40 in town and 45-47 on the freeway. I just got a chip for it, makes it way more fun to drive. To bad the chip is only 20hp.

Re:VW TDI

My wife and I owned two '84 Rabbit diesels. We experienced no problems with either diesel engine. When we sold them they were over 10 years old with over 250,000 miles.
They were maintained according to the owners manual but were given no other special attention. One even pulled our boat back and forth to the lake for a few years. The clutch was never worked on either. Both engines were built in Mexico.

One thing to do is change the glow plugs every two years.
If you failed to do this you were parked the first cold day.
You can test them with an ohm meter but after two years I found you would be chasing one and then another. Just easier to do all four and be done with it.

When we sold the vehicles the engines were going strong but the NY winters and road salt had taken its toll.

Re:VW TDI

My wife and I test drove one about a week ago and I was impressed, the wife wasn't! She bought a Civic SI instead and it seems like it will be a good little car for her. She's happy so I'm "plum tickled". Tony

Re:VW TDI

Yep best little pi*s cutter I have ever owned. 96 Passat TDI, maintained but not pampered. Has about 180 on it now only thing that has been done is a timing belt at 96. (and the A/c fixed 'cause a stick went through the condensor)Consistently get 50mpg city/highway. Body is showing some rust now, and the smuck in the front never healed after I killed bambi..
It is going to be replaced this fall with another Passat TDI (if the diesel gods ever allow them over here). If not I am going to keep on driving it until it quits. Can't say enuff good about it.
