VP-44 Bonanza
Is it just my imagination, or is there a disproportionate amount of VP-44 biting the farm around here lately??? I know that our flock has grown quite a bit since I joined, but the number of threads about loss of power, white smoking on cold starts and dead pedal seem to take up a lot more space in the "Help Column" lately. I wonder, if this is true, then why is it so prevalent after the winter months have waned......

Maybe the warmer weather gets the 'looser' worn-out pumps... Mine started acting up when the weather finally warmed up over 50* this week. White smoke, poor throttle responce followed by dead pedal. My buddy just went thru a VP last week too. Time for a hotrod vp!

I kind of wonder if the colder weather thickens the fuel and causes the pump to work harder, wearing on the pump volutes, and then after the weather warms up the pump then bites the bullet because the fuel has less viscosity..... Too much thinking for my simple mind....I'll go sit back in the closet for now.
Roadranger, I use Dieselkleen religiously year round..... and have done so for the life of my truck and it has still eaten 2 VP's. This second one has lasted longer in it's death throes than the 1st one did, but then Cummins bought the 1st one. This second one is out of my wallet so I am gonna milk it till its TOAST.

Add to that, I gelled mine twice this winter... I guess 16oz of powerservice for 20 gallons wasn't enough.
Mine's given me more than I ever asked for. I've run at 600HP+ for the last year daily driving and sled pulling, it's about time for a new one since I believe this one's stock @ 178k miles.

That doesn't sound good at all....
Just curious, how many lift pump failures have you suffered?

Was that Powerservice in the White or Grey bottle?
I've had no problem this winter (-12F) with just 8oz of PS White every fillup.

White bottle. I think the FASS's hanging filters had something to do with getting the fuel chilled since they hang down in the air stream when I'm parked and it's -20F. Mach 6 injectors probably don't help with warming the truck up either.

I have had 2 lift pumps replaced by DC and since 100K has passed, I have replaced only one. I check pump pressure at every oil change (since I do not have permanent gauges
) and currently it is pumping satisfactorily. I have another friend who has gauges on his 02 and is currently on his 3rd VP and DC has had to pay for both of his changeouts and he still has 15K left on Cummins nickle. Because of the way my VP acts this time I feel that it may be an internal electrical issue with the pump because any time it dead pedals, I can turn the ignition off and back on and the problem INSTANTLY dissappears for a bit, but then again returns. I have noticed that since it has gotten much warmer here (mid 80's low 90's) the frequency of dead pedal has become more frequent.

143,000 original VP44, one lift pump, one map sensor, one crank position sensor, stock engine.
Use 8oz additive at each fill, with 2oz cheap tranny fluid mixed in. I use 13 old 8 oz bottles that had sewage tank odor additive in them. When the top is on they don't leak. I carry them in a small cooler in the back of the truck when on a trip.
