UPS using auto/turbodiesels??

So I work from home, and when I hear a truck passing by I usually think..... THATS THE such and such truck, then look through the blinds and check to see if I was right

The local UPS driver is now driving what sounds like and automatic and is DEFINITELY a turbodiesel. Never noticed a turbo in a UPS pickup and delivery truck before

Anyone know what they are using?! Sounds almost like the Benz motor.

Noticed the same thing around here. I see them every day here at work and just noticed the TD sound. Not sure what they are using but next time he comes in I'll ask. Should be later today.

Some of the smaller UPS trucks are those silly Sprinter's which, of course, have that 5 cylinder MB in them.

Are you sure they are automatics you're hearing?

A couple of years ago, we were at one of my wife's friends house for a kids B day party. Friends brother works for UPS and I asked him this question. He told me they use all brands just in case there were problems with one of them, it wouldn't park their entire fleet, fwiw. (I wonder if they only used Navistars in the past and learned this lesson.

Fed Ex trucks around here do sound familiar and some of the UPS trucks as well, but all the one's I've seen and heard are sticks.

The UPS man that delivers to me frequently has a gasser and it's a decent sized truck. It almost sounds like he has glass packs on it, when he slows down for my driveway it cackels like crazy! That's the tell tale sign that the UPS man is here.

In a delivery application with lots of starts and stops, and auto tranny can save 20% or more on time. Put another way, a driver could make 20% more stops in the same amount of time.

Eventually, all the delivery traffic will automatics. The mining companies and such are seeing the light on this too-- almost all of them are going to auto trannies in large dumps and such that do a lot of stop/start. The time savings is substantial.

And, to a business-- time is money.

Automatics

Some of the ready mix trucks in Temple are KWs and Macks with automatics. The drivers like them alot more than the sticks. Quicker in traffic.

theres so many new drivers an automatic transmission is the only way they would be able to learn to drive in a decent amount of time. they are hell of transmissions that dont seem to have a lot of problems

We wanted automatics in our new tandem axle dumps at work, but it was a 16,000 dollar option. Too much money for the "low bid" mentality around here.

Another reason for the popularity of autos IMO is that hardly anyone can drive a stick anymore.

A guy I know went from Penske to UPS. He said they're running gas trucks now but plan to convert the fleet to diesel in a couple years.

I saw a bigger than usual UPS truck the other day, I noticed it because I heard what sounded to me like a pretty awesome cummins, complete with turbo whine. I looked, expecting to see a big dodge, instead it was a larger type of UPS delivery truck. I could tell he liked driving it too.

UPS using auto/turbodiesels ?.

Hello Guys.
I'm a tech for Fedex and we run Cummins 12 V and 24 V engines, From 1996
too 2005, We are also running Allison autos, Fe 545, and 1000's. The autos
are great for stop and go. The vehicles get shut off and started at every
stop the drivers make, It's hard on starters and alternators. The Ups boys
are running everything, Cummins,Powerstrokes,Gm's and lots of gas engine.
We are also running alot of MB sprinters with the 5 cyl diesel engines.
Bob.

The UPS man that deliverys to my parents business i kow has a PSD in his truck, i can tell by the sound. The Fedex man has a 5.9 CTD and it sounds like a 12v. Now the UPS man that delivers in my neighborhood has a gasser and like someone else said, it sounds like it has glasspacks on it. all the trucks though i ever hear or see always have 5 spds, haven't seen an auto yet. On another note, I happen to like when i stop by my parents business and both UPS and FEDEX are there, they always race out of the lot. It's pretty funny to watch two box vans race. Usually the Fedex wins.
