Turbo'd IH 756?

Me and my dad are going to build a "stock" class tractor to play with, but I am trying to figure out what to run for a turbo on it? The tractor has a 310 ci. DI non turbo motor in it, well I want a turbo so we can get the #'s up to were we want them, while saving some fuel. I was thinking a stock Cummins H1C would work or if you think it will be to much? I have access to a couple of parts motors so parts shouldn't be a real big problem. Anyone have some input on this?

I'm farily sure IH used Garrett turbos in those days...someone else may know more. Probably best to stick with an IH part #?

IH did use Garretts back then, but there is no reason you can't put a Holset or a Schwitzer on it, as long as its the right size. A H1C would work fine as long as you turn the fuel up with it.

We ran a WH1C with a 16cm non wastegated housing on a John Deere 466 for a little bit, spooled almost instantly. The large compressor housing on the H1C made installation a little difficult, had to modify the upper water manifold. Recently swapped it for a H2C, much bigger, doesn't spool as well, but breaths alot better. Also had some room issues with the hood and had to get creative with the intake plumbing.

There's a guy down the road from me that is into IH's pretty big, his son has an 826 with an M&W turbo on it that pulls pretty good.

What weight classes are you looking at pulling in?

I plan on uping the pump as much as I can. Its still gonna be a farm tractor, but some of the guys that pull around here don't like us much. They have been beat a few times by our stock 856 (read: every time 8) ) So they tend to screw with us on the dyno. So we want to build this one to run in the 7500-9500# classes. Plus have the pump setup to not dump alot of fuel until its well below the PTO speed, should help us on the dyno As far as clearence and what not I will have the manifold modded so it fits without cutting the hoods. Intake shouldn't be to hard and the exhaust might be a challenge to make it look "factory". Thanks for the info though and I will keep everyone updated as this progresses.

I know IH offered the D-358 with a turbo on some overseas applications but I don't know if they ever turbo'd the D-310 from the factory or not. Just keep in mind that those are pretty expensive engines to work on so you don't want to abuse it too hard.

I know. I have have trying to get my dad to "retire" our old 856. She has 13000hrs on her and is really tired. I want to make that my puller, because that has the 407 in it and they came factory turbo'ed. He just wont come off it, but once the 756 becomes home maybe then I can redo the 856.

856's are non turbo, 1256's are turbo'd. Throw a charger on it and put 1256 badges on it.

If I was going to do it, I would start with a 966 or a 1066, put a DT466A in it.

I have a 1256 and 2 856's. The 12 is our workhorse and the 8's are for the rest of the work. I wouldn't put 1256 badges on it, but it would get some other kind of badge. As for the 1066 it doesn't fit in with the rest of the tractors, and you can always repower it later.
