Just saw a new 5.7L Tundra today, sat in it and cranked it. The inside was just OK. The rear seat room looked to be about like the Current Ram Quad Cab. Interior was nothing special IMHO. The exterior look was just OK, but subjectively I can see why some would think its ugly. It was a long bed so it looked like it would be useful for carrying. I image the drive-ability creams my 6 speed 3/4 ton Ram. So what. I didn't buy my Ram for its ride.

401 ft. lbs. of torque doesn't impress me if you have to scream the engines guts out, up near 4,000 rpm to make use of it (I don't know where the torque max is for sure, but I'm guessing it to be around 3,250 rpm or so). Who here, after towing with a Cummins, wants to scream a gasser's guts out towing a couple jet-ski's or a bass boat up Jellico Mtn? Not me.

I also saw an '08 Super Duty with the new twin turbo 6.4L PowerChoke. Funny thing, it was sitting at a used parking lot. Probably just to generate traffic there ... seems like it was a Lincoln, Mercury, something else Ford related used cars. Good looking? Not so much to me. Basically MORE of the same SuperDuty look. The SuperDuty style has never been my thang. The 2nd gen Dodges look the best to me, followed by the later model Chevy's.

Wink Got to agree.....

was Ford for the 70s Chevy for the eighties and SOLD on Dodges in the 90s
and 2000 plus Just love what it can do...

I tow heavy and with snow wind and water and the marinas, I LOVE the dodge one ton.

I shake my head at the commercials, all of em, cause yeah- people will fall for what makes them look good.

GMC work trucks, and Dodge is what I see out there...maybe you oilfield guys know better than me... was able to drive and talk with a contractor who had the 'new' tundra and what a POS.... when loaded ;it bucked and bottomed out with the same tool carrier it had on a Ford. same with the snow plows, guys took them right back I was told.

maybe for you 'go fast' guys it is okay- I DID think it looked liek a dodge also- but I need a seven year truck that can haul and get out of it's own way.
I DO AGREE with anything that thinks for the consumer- like the engine work room and cab stuff BUT I do NOT want to be at the marina , in the water,
trying to haul up a 15,000 pound boat and have it squat, spin, or conk out because the air quality sensor goes off....I just need a tough truck that feels very comfortable on the long hauls. Dodge one ton CTD off road 4x4 gets it done with ZERO mods.....

The new Tundra is a 1/2 ton, not 2/4 or 1 ton, max towing is not as high as the CTD Rams, we need to be comparing it to a Hemi Ram 1500. It is unreasonable to expect a 1/2 ton to haul and tow as well as an HD diesel. The Tundra is a great 1/2 ton and the Ram is a heck of great HD with the Cummins.

Dont know why I felt compelled to look at anything that says TOYOTA on this site. Ive already become very accustomed to the Toyloyalty on the DODGE CTD website.

Toyota might have the big 3 worried but its guys like me that have Toyota worried. Call it blind ignorance, call it whatever you like, I dont find myself needing to look at what Toyota is doing in the same manner that I dont care what lurking in my nephews diaper. Its his crap let his parents play with it.

As a side note I couldnt be happier with Toyotas Nextel cup offerings thus far. Seems very fitting they found the most annoying guy in nascar and made him their main spokesperson/team leader. (go Mickey )

Those Toyota folks also need to realize that THE CARDBOARD ADS IN EVERY MAGAZINE ARENT HELPING SELL THAT HUNK OF CRAP. If a reagular ad on the back of every magazine and two in the middle wont do it then what makes you think a 1/4 thick ads gonna do it either? We all know what your selling and some of us cant be reached. Get it through your heads!!!!!!!! If I want a real 4x4 i'll get a Rubicon or a Power Wagon.

When Toy's 1/2 ton price is not within easy reach of dodge's 3/4 ton cummins, then we will stop comparing them, until then it is perfectly logical. What's toy's 3/4 ton diesel gonna cost, 60 grand???

The only decent comparion test I've seen so far had the toy's handling 2nd worst. Whats the point of all that stoplight drag power if it handles on par with a 97 escort wagon.

Yeah, I shake my head too. I try to watch the commercials, and "keep it real," about what it really means. When I'm towing my enclosed trailer (loaded or not) I generally run 65 mph and try to AVERAGE *over* 13 mpg. While I'm towing I have lots of other guys blow by me towing heavy or somewhat heavy at insane speeds. I just grin to myself thinking that this guy feels like he just showed me how fast his truck is and how good he thinks it makes him look. He doesn't realize how busy I am trying to conserve fuel because I'm paying for it. And how my coolant and EGT's are so very low, and how much higher his is and how he's getting 8 mpg (or less if a gasser) pulling that hard.

To me the fact is, the Tundra will haul groceries ... real fast. Maybe a lot of groceries too. But I'm not interested in FAST. I'm interested in capability combined with durability & efficiency.

And by efficiency I don't JUST mean fuel mileage. But a truck / engine who's track record is aimed at more simplicity, more durability generally means less repair for me which equals efficiency too, because I'm shelling out less money to keep it motoring on down the road. The Cummins wins versus all others since 1998 (meaning that's when I started looking), and continues to win IMHO today.

To date, my truck has needed $0 mechanical repair by me, and only 1 LP under warranty. I'm in my 8th year with it, almost 115k miles. Good ole truck.

The ad is real. I was there.
I spent 3 weeks doing the rough grading for the ad.
It was filmed in Desert Center at Kaiser Steel's Eagle Mt. Mine.
There was much prep work done, done again and done again to make the commercial.
As far as stunt drivers goes, thats why they make the big bucks...

In the middle pic, you can see the last 25' of ramp hanging over the edge.
In total, the ramp was right at 1000' at a 2% incline.

Top left: Cleaning up before filming.

Top center: Helicopter used for filming.

Top right: End of a take. As you can see, its a long way down from the end of the ramp. The gates can be seen at about 3:00...by the teamsters head.

Bottom left: From across the pit, the yellow line shows the general area where the ramp was built.

Bottom right: Shown next to my truck is what I wheel in....
but thats another thread..

I drove a Tundra last week. I will have to say it drives very nice. I don't like the cheap interior. The looks are only ok. I guarantee this truck will sell very well though. Toyota has an outstanding reputation and they finally have built a 1/2 ton that is a true class leader.

toyota has a good reputation, but not in the full size truck market. the t-100 and tundra has not lived up to toyota's reputation to say the least. With that said, the new tundra will have to prove that it is much better then the two previous attemps toyota has tried at building a full size pickup truck!
