Tire question (larger in the rear only)

Got a tire question. I used the search feature but could not find the answer.

First of all I have a 2wd 2500 mega cab CTD SRW. All stock.

I want a beefier tire in the rear to get better traction in mild offroad situations. I realize its a 2wd and I don't plan on trying to get into anything stupid but I live in the country on a few acres and the roads get messy and my property gets a muddy.

I want to stick with a stock AT 265/70 17 in the front
specifically this tire: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....L7810&i1_Qty=2

In the rear a MT 35x12.5 17 this one: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....7KL71&i1_Qty=2

An old country dude I work with says that's the way people used to do it before 4wd trucks were available.

Is this a horrible idea?
Anyone done it?
Anyone know of any example pics?

Thanks

A less wide tire generally will work better in mud.

Used to be done all the time on 2wd trucks. However on one of the new trucks with ABS, it's gonna freak out your ABS system, the two different size tires are going to give it different speed signals front to rear and it's going to throw some codes, and might make it brake pretty screwy also. That's the main reason you don't see it done much anymore.

I think the tire tread/make is really the key issue. If you put Mud Terrain back there, with limited slip, you should do pretty good. I have the GoodYear Silent Armour AT ,they work well as a good all around AT tire. Keeping the same size makes the spare easier too.

Aside from throwing the ABS for a loop, it will look hillbilly as he!!.
Keep the 265s all around or 285s all around. Just get an AT tire for the fronts and a MT for the rears.

used to see that all the time in west tx on srw trucks even on the newer trucks with abs and they have no problem as long as the hiegt is closed together off by an inch or 2 wont hurt.

hill billy I don't mind. I like Rich's response but the ABS thing does make sense. Thanks for all the answers!

I always wondered why I didn't see that set up much anymore. I thought that was standard on the old Ford Camper Specials in SoCal. A large wide highway rib on the rear and a regular hiway rib on the fronts. Why couldn't you just run that setup wiht the same height tires on all four?

I went with a 306/65 17 Procomp AT extreme all around and some new 17x9 moto metal rims. I decided to get daystar 2.5" spacers, AFE intake, and cat back exhaust as well. I'll post some pics when I get it in and installed. Ordered online from 4Wheelparts last night.

I think you made the right choice going same sized all around.
I personally don't think it helps much going with that much of a larger tire just in the rear, it'll just float and sink the front end and make you look like a true hick . 35 is way too big.

I do like the look of a stock or maybe one size up mudder in the rear on the 2wd trucks. Going too much though will screw with the ABS system I've heard... since the hubs will be spinning different speeds at any time ya know.

Why not rock 35's all the way around? The width of the fronts will help you float. In some conditions, however, you are better off with stock pizza cutters.

Edit: I am gonna guess that those 315's are gonna be too big for the front unless you lift or level. I have heard that they are tight on a 4X4.
