Tinted window question
Tinted window question
It looks like I am going to be moving to the D.C. area. This just came up so I don't know yet exactly where I am going to live yet. But my question is my truck has tinted windows in the front doors is that going to be a problem in the D.C. area or in near by Maryland or Virgina. I'm going to ask this on some other parts of the board to because I don't know exactly which part of the board to ask this on.
it all depends on what the leagal percentace is in that state.... here in GA it's 32%..... i almost believe that's the nation wide standard..... there are plenty of people i know including me that have illegal tint.... my truck is 5% and the whole windshield is 32%..... my Expedition is 1% all around except the windshield that is clear..... just don't do anything stupid to attract attention to your self and *most* cops will leave you alone......
i live just north of baltimore the limit is 30 or 35% in maryland. side and back window are all at 20 % and i haven't had any problems, i had them tinted for over a year now put i haven't been pulled over with them yet. the cops in maryland tend to pick on the rice burners more.

I drive around with 5% on all my glass and over OEM tint also. I have wide strips across the top and bottom of my windshield also. Just do like the others said in the event you get pulled over simply roll down both windows immediately. I've been through a few road blocks (checking for expired tags), and I've unfortunately been stopped a couple of times. No probs yet!
Here's a pic a couple of days after the tint was done!

Up here is Maine the limit is 50% all around except windshield, you can have a 6" strip at the top. When I take my windows for my car to be tinted I am probably gonna go with 20% on all windows and 50% on the windshield.
I would not worry about it unless you like to attract attention to yourself, and just make sure you roll your windows down if you get pulled over.

Its all about 5% baby. Im liking my stock tint for now. I think im going to have the fronts match. I had a buddy that had 5% on all of his windows except the winsheild bit he still had that tinted 20%. Talk about illegal!
Hey guys, I got nailed nailed for tint in VA last week with my new Jetta.
I had the 20% tint (dark stuff) on it, trooper pulled me over on I-64 near Williamsburg and slipped the measuring device over the window and wrote me a $30 equipment malfunction fine - after $56 processing charges included I just mailed a check for $86 to them. He quoted me both the VA and MD laws.
I live in MD and drive into DC everyday for work and have never been bothered. I saw a number of very dark tinted cars pass by during the traffic stop - being that I was out of state I think that he saw me as an easy revenue source by sending in a check rather than taking time off of work to challenge it in court.
To ensure we're talking apples and apples, 20% means it permits 20% of the light to pass through. Hence, the 35% tint is lighter, and 50% is lighter still.
Be forewarned, the 35% tint by itself is legal here in MD, but if you use it to cover a tinted window, the resulting tint number may put it over the limit.
It turns out I don't like the 20% anyways - it's to dark for my taste. So I went ahead and had it replaced with 50% tint. I travel frequently to DC, VA, NJ, DE and PA so I also wanted to minimize the probability of mailing more checks.
The good news is that he didn't write me up for the radar detector sitting in my glove box - he said they can be in the vehicle but that they cannot be within reach of the driver or a power source. He asked to pick it up and see if it was cold from not being used.

So you got pulled over for the tint alone bulabula? How did he see the radar detector in the glove box? thats something else.
I have 5% on the ram, 15% on the Ranger. Love the darker tint, never had any problems with the law in KY.

The radar detector was in the glove box where it usually sits and he saw it when I opened it to produce registration and insurance papers. I know their use is illegal in VA and I wasn't using because of that (told him so) - so I wasn't concerned when he saw it there.
The last time I had my vehicles inspected the guy checked the tint. He said he was getting fined by cops for passing vehicles with illegal tint. My wife has an eye condition that permits her to have darker tint legally. She had to go to the eye doctor and fill out a state police form and get it approved for my truck and her car. This is how we have "illegal" tint on our vehicles. We have to keep the paperwork in the car in case we get pulled over which she has once.
