thermal king diesel?????

Does anyone know the specs on a thermal king refrigerator diesel engine? I need to know the approx cubic inches and horsepower rating etc. A friend of mine has one that is missing the injector pump and he seems to think it would be a good engine to put into my land rover. I think it's too small but I haven't seen it. I'm thinkin 4BT but I'd have to do some suspension mods.

I work for Werner Trucking In Tomah Wis. We run Great Dane trailers with Thermo King diesels. I do know they are Yanmar engines but not too sure on the specs. All we do with them is services. We have a Thermo KIng mechanic on hand 5 days a week for the annoying stuff. Ill check with him and see what I can get for info.

I'd appreciate that. It's on a 48 foot trailer .Still seems kinda small to power a truck but maybe I'm wrong.... I hope that I am. A free engine works for me.

The Thermo Kings use either 2, 3 or 4 cylinder Yanmar or 4 cylinder Isuzu engines depending on the trailer temp and size. Not sure of the size on the 2 and 3 cylinder models but the more common 4 cylinders are 2.2 liters with 34 hp.

All I know is that it's a 4 cyl. And you aren't kidding tmc that would need alot of bombing even though the land rover has an aluminum body. Don't know if it is that bombable. lol The stock land rover gasser has an 80 hp 2.25 litre. If I could get 80 hp out of the diesel I'd be happy. Guess I'm back to the 4Bt plan.

Have you checked out any of the VW diesels from a wrecker? For some reason certain auto wreckers cannot move these engines out of wrecks and then the next place can never keep them around. Might be worth the search.

Yeah but they only burn one gallon of fuel per hour at rated load!
One thing that always amazed me about the little 4 cylinder reefer engines is they take 16 quarts of oil. Think it's so they can go longer between changes.

Hmm maybe with a turbo and intercooler and a little more fuel it can be a worthy contender.

I think you will find that engine would be designed and balanced for quite low RPM, you would probably end up doing like 40 MPH right to the pin,

Is it air cooled??? familiar with the Yanmars on gensets etc but not Reefers.

Haven't been around the Yanmars on the reefers, but on the John Deere equipment. They can be turbocharged. The one used on a 1050 and 1070 tractors are.

They have radiators.

Nice little engine, but I think a 4BT would be a better canidate for your use, assuming it fits.

LOL the land rover is geared so low top speed in low range 4th gear is about 25mph anyways. In high range with the overdrive on I can get it up to 60mph barely. Not sure if it's air or liquid cooled probably air. I'm gonna go look at it on saturday and see if it warrants any more thought.
