there taking sulfur out of the diesel

i heard last night that there gonna take almost all the sulfur out of the diesel for emmisions reason has anybody else heard this.........

Ultra Low Sulfur .......it's available already in some areas, coming to others nationwide in 2007.

Sulphur really isn't a good thing to be passing through tight tolerance lift and injection pumps.

Have you ever seen raw sulphur? It's kinda like chunky yellow baby powder, and smells like the day after a big mexican meal.

The problem with sulphur in fuel is the removal process also makes the fuel less slippery, so less lubrication.

The more sulphur they remove, the less lubricating the fuel is, so more lubrication additives need to be added.

So -

a) does this mean that there will be two different kinds of diesel sold at the stations?

b) what are the RAMifications (gosh I'm funny) to our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gen Cummins moving to ULSD? Or are we going to get into a situation where the mfgs of pre-2006 or 07 vehicles just say 'too bad - you're on your own', or is this a good thing - i.e - our trucks will run better, as long as we include some lubricity additives?

The truck stop around the corner from me has Ultra Low Sulfur fuel. Its the only place that I have seen around in So-Cal. The place has a big sign on the pump saying its ULS fuel.

I've filled it up twice now.......just to see if there is a difference.

I can't tell the difference in the power dept, the MPG is up maybe .5-1 mpg (so no loss there).

And its priced the same as the regular diesel stuff at Chevron or Shell.

Well, I dont like to admit this but in the winter time, I run offroad fuel(red stuff) which is cheaper. Untill I get Caught But anyhow, I noticed that when i run it, it quiets the motor down a great bit. It is high sulfur fuel and I buy it on occasion in the summer time I love it and it changes the smell of the exhaust pipe(makes it smoke more also). Not to many diesel trucks around my area so they dont check me. But at the county fair, they check me every time I go into the place. Sorry I got off topic But I felt that I had to share my views on High sulfur diesel fuel.

Actually the change comes in Aug of this year. Many stations are already selling it without telling you and most people will never know the difference. Lubricity is added back so it's the same as the present diesel.

Off road diesel will change in Aug also, all that will be available is the same low sulfur diesel required for on road now. There will no longer be any high sulfur diesel. No big deal since most offroad has been low sulfur for a long time anyway.

I used to run offroad and could definitely tell the difference but the high sulfur version hasn't been available in my area for a long time. Running just 2% biodiesel feels about the same as high sulfur.

Most of the onroad diesel engines coming in '07 can be damaged by running anything but ultra low sulfur diesel. Not sure yet how they will respond to bio but there is talk in the fuel industry of using bio to add back the lubricity lost when sulfur is removed.

Were already seeing the affects of ULSD , again like the last time, we are seeing failures in ISX engine that have a lift pump, there is a mounting gaskets that is stamp steel to mount right to the ISFM and a adaptor plate that mounts to the lift pump with a rubber edge gasket that are failing, not the lift pump itself,
