Straight Pipes
A straight pipe sounds very good on these trucks. I mean, its just simply awsome. My friend heard me coming a mile away (it gets loud when you lay on the pedal) and he thought it was a tuned up tractor trailer!
I had mine done about a month after buying it.. sounds great,But of course you can expect it to be loud.. and it is.I also have the silencer ring removed and a better air intake, which helps.

I envy the 1st and 2nd gen guys. The straight pipes on your trucks sound awesome. I straight piped my third gen and hated the sound. It (to me) sounded ''raspy'' or ''ricey''. Put on a 4''by 36'' straight through glasspack to put the bass back. Not as loud but sounds good.
I really like my 3rd gen with the 4" straight pipe, it gives it a little more of the sound it deserves. I don't really think you can get a "ricer-ish" sound from a 5.9 cubic inch engine, though.

No, from a 5.9 cubic inch engine, you would get a sound much like a chainsaw....
From a 5.9 liter engine though, it barks a bit. I liked the sounds of my buddy's 98 1st series with the 12 valve. Have not run in to too many 24v trucks that are piped. Most continue to run mufflers.
3rd gen units sound odd no matter what you do. waaayyyy too quiet to begin with.
