ok just to sum this up i could get a truck if i drove to mexico and bought one but it would be a major hassel to register one in NC

Just wait, they will come... maybe. Otherwise your closest bet is a chassis cab 3500 dually. Nothing wrong there.

When i was in Mexico i saw a 4500 solid frame, tandem axle. Looked just like the 2nd gen's.

Lots of tandem axle trucks down here, Ford's, Dodge, Nissan etc. Suspect that many of them are after market.
