Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!! Good to hear that you won. Both of you. David beats Goliath. Let us know when you are back on the road. Did Chrysler reimburse you for any of your sundry expenses and loss of use etc?

Just curious to know how this has ended. Do you have your truck back yet? Are you happy with the job? Was the final paydown to your satisfaction? What is your new engine warranty? Was your old engine just repaired or did Dodge spring for a new engine? Etc etc.
Congrats on winning. Great job!

Im interested too:

What was the final determination??? Where did they say the brass came from?? what kind of oil filter did u have on your truck?? and what did they blame the failure on??

BTW, very good work....its good to see someone get some satisfaction. Sometimes I think they deny a lot of warranties based on the Cummins name..."well its a Cummins, cant be anything wrong with the motor - the owner must have done something wrong"

Mexstan, what a coincidence...... Just yesterday I went through a lot of old posts and some searches to find this thread and inquire about it too!!
The last reply that I read was from his wife I think and I am not sure if it was in this forum or the "other" forum.Maybe it was even under another name.I hope they read this and bring us up to date.
What a coincidence......Ron

HI, I just changed oil from rottella 15-40 to amsoil 5-30, hooked up my 6000k camper and headed south. Two miles down the road the truck shuddered briefly while excellerating in 4th gear. Like a sudden schock to the motor or a miss, then smooth and ok. Oil pressure good. 70 miles later, nok, nok, nok, nok, nok!!! I turned around and drove it home. Took it to dodge dealer yesterday, they said they will check it out today. I bought the truck 1 yr ago, it has 85k on it and 1 month after I got it with 67k I wasw told the auto tranny was going out, no warranty, and paid $2600 to rebuild it!

I hope you resolved your problems, since I just found your article by searching 'motor knock' can you advise how to best proceed? You probably could councel as a consumer advocate by now, with your unfortunate experience!

Thanks for any advise to prepare me in advance . SCOTT

rangerst,
In your case, have the oil analyized, and if it is a lubrication failure, Amsoil should be responsible according to their warranty. The S3K 5W-30 is not an API certified oil.

There's no actual brass in the engine to my knowledge. Maybe a sensor fitting or something on the outside, but not on the inside.

Since brass is just copper and zinc, I can't see how analysis could distinguish between the presence of brass vs the presence of copper and zinc, both of which are definitely in the engine. Copper is a layer of the bearings, and zinc is in the oil already in the form of ZPD or ZDDP in most oils.

The old saw about "worn to the brass" for bearings is a misnomer because bearings aren't made of brass at all...
