Sniffer test for Tenn.4/05
The paper said sniffer tests are in order for Hamilton(Chattanooga), Williamson, Davidson and I guess Sumner counties beginning 4/1/05. Sniffer @ idle and fuel cap for '02 and older is what I read for less than 10500#gvw. '03's and up get the computer port plugin if I read right.
We've got the opacity test here in Front Range Colorado.
What a load of bull!
I asked the guy in the test center if any pickup has ever failed, and he said NO, not to his knowledge.
The State also requires an annual test for diesels at $60 a pop, but bi-annual tests for gassers at $35 a pop. Discriminating against the diesel...

are all of these test "unloaded"? I bet I would pass easy unloaded but if I was loaded (like a dyno) it could be very ugly.
I would guess it would be very tough not to pass just running 2000 rpm in neutral.

Could be worst. Friend of mine has to pull the 'race' engine out of his mustang each year and drop in the factory one so he can pass emissions. Then put it back afterwards. That's what he get's for living in california.

There are many people going to great lengths to get around the California SMOG tests with their performance vehicles. So, you really have to wonder what the California SMOG regulations are actually accomplishing.
Of course part of what they are accomplishing is keeping the SMOG test industry in business with tests at $50 a pop. And of course in California we have to pay an annual registration fee that goes directly to the SMOG regulators. The way I see it, the California SMOG regs generate more in revenues for government and industry than they do in reducing air pollution.
Yes, California is totally screwed up! On a side note, diesel engines are still exempt from SMOG tests in California.

Hopefully mine will pass, if not then I'll do some pump adjustments, if it still doesn't then trousdale county will get my tag $$. They already do for my 79 Chevy K20 anyways

It wouldn't surprise me to see the diesels go above the $39.50 though anytime soon, they sure did it with our fuel nationwide.

Parts of Ohio have opacity with a high limit of 20% on a dyno to 35mph. The way around it is to tell them that its stuck in 4x4 (they arent smart enough to figure it out) and then they will neutral test it.
They run ours on the rollers once every two years and do "simulated" driving conditions. They are checking for opacity I don't have the specs for the new truck but I think it is up to 30% (NEVER gets that high)
Here in Tucson (Pima County) it is $12.25 for all vehicles. All 1967 and newer vehicles are required to be emissions tested annually. For 8500lbs GVW and less are loaded with a dynamometer and measured..maximum opacity for these Diesels is 30%....Heavy Duty 8501lbs GVW and above are tested with the snap-acceleration (wide open throttle, no-load accerlerations from idle to max governed speed with trannys in neutral)..the average of the 3 accelerations cannot exceed the standard..1991 and newer is 40% and 1990 and older is 55%...I have never heard of a diesel in out county failing...heck my 87 ford 6.9 was a piece and i think even she was below 15%...in our county they are easy on diesel but on gasser they are much worse
...although my dad did get stopped for excessive smoke on his 87 ford 6.9 and just laughed at the cop n said she wasnt even smokin yet...I am curious what my truck will test at..I believe this coming year I will have to emissions her.

Here in MO (stl), over 8500 gvw or diesel, emission exempt.
