Sleeping in your truck.

So, maybe a stupid question but maybe not......

How safe is it to sleep in your truck while its running with the AC or heat on? When I say safe, not from a crime standpoint, that is what I have got a Glock for..........from a health standpoint. Speaking of Carbon Minoxide and things like that.

There are quite a few guys on here that do this, some even have converted their backseat into a sleeper. Don't think there is a problem with it.

Im looking to purchase a Mega for this exact reason. I would suggest a Carbon monoxide detector. Or possibly use an electric blanket for the winter. Im not sure how tough these batteries are, I know an optima would be up to the challenge.

ditto. just crack both windows.
If you are seriously worried about it, I remember a year or two ago there was an ad on TV(not sure if it still is on TV...i dont watch TV) for some fan that would fit in a car window to suck out all of the hot air during the day. It was designed to keep the cab cool in the summer heat. You could always get one of those to circulate the air.

Breathing diesel fumes is not good for you but is not immediately dangerous because there is virtually no carbon monoxide which is what kills people with gas engines.

If you are going to sleep in the cab, make sure that you don't have any exhaust leaks and try to park facing into the wind. Also, try not to park right downwind of someone else doing the same thing.

If you want to sleep in it but are worried about leaving the engine running, I can think of two other options for cold climates. One would be to get an ESPAR or similar diesel auxilary heater and the other would be to get a really warm sleeping bag(this is what I do). Some of us sleep a lot better when it is really cold and you also have the peace of mind that you won't freeze when your truck breaks down in the middle of nowhere.

Thanks guys. I was just curious. I have thought about sleeping in the truck on some extended trips but didnt know how safe it would be. No, I dont do hotshotting. Just maybe some long ATV trips in the future. Winter time would not be a problem. Sleeping bag would be fine with me. But in the summer, I would definitely have to leave the truck running for some AC.

On a side note, I had to go to Nashville from Knoxville for surgery two weeks ago. The wife wanted to know why I wanted to drive the truck instead of her car. She said her car would be easier to get around the parking garage. After I had surgery she figured out why. I folded down the seats in the MC and completely stretched out in the back. Slept all the way home......except when she slammed on the brakes......haha!!

That trip just gave me some more inspiration for driving the truck on extended trips.

I've slept in mine a couple of times. Yes, leave the window cracked open even with the engine off. These trucks are so tight that you can use up all the air. I forgot once and woke up in the morning gasping for breath with a serious headache.

another problem is you will have to idle the engine up to get the ac to cool and that will also cause the engine temp to rise with less air on the rad and condenser
