run in program?
run in program?
I've done some looking around here and haven't found anything yet. I'm trying to find out if anyone knows if or has heard of this. I bought my 2001 off a Ford lot. The salesman said he also drives a 24V. He said he thought there is a run-in program that changes at 36,000. He thought there was a change in his at 36k. What do you think? True, just breaking in, or just blowing smoke? I've got 24k. Is it not broke in yet?
Re:run in program?
HUH?????? They may have that whatever it is on those wannabee diesels but this is a real diesel you are driving now.

My only question here would be what was it doing on a ford lot with that low a mileage? That would make me suspicious about something. Do you know the story on it?

To answer your question, your engine is broke in but they don't get real broke in till about the first 100000 miles. I have had three of them now and that is about when they start to run the best.
Re:run in program?
The salesman drives a 2001 CTD also and that is what he said he had heard. He did say there was a noticeable change at 36k. I'll bet its just breaking in. The Ford I had prior to the Dodge took about 25K before it broke in. Drove it hard though. Think I have quite a few miles before the Cummins is broke in. As for the truck, I really didn't look into its history. It is in perfect condition. Stock Michelins (I assume, correct size) look about half worn. Engine had been cleaned, didn't see anything wet there. Looked underneath and by the tightness of truck, it probably hadn't seen much offroad use (some people are pretty tough on trucks in the Colorado mountains). The bed has a mat in it, pulled it up and hardly any scratches. It looks as if maybe a couple sheets of plywood is all the bed has seen. It has a brake control in it so I assume it did some pulling. The mileage was the reason I bought it. Its hard to find a diesel around here with less than 100k. You can find some, but they bring premium price. I got this 2001 Quad SLT, long bed, auto, 4x4 with 22,500 miles for $25,200. Coludn't find anything else with that mileage for less than 30,000. I've put about 2K miles on it and nothings failed me yet... Except got locked out with the keys in the switch, engine running. Thought the manual says you can't do that. ??? Pleased so far!!! ;D
Re:run in program?
You can find a decent deal every now and then. May have been someone that was just unhappy with the Dodge and wanted the Ford. A fellow here at work did that. Said the Ford was faster. Maybe some one bought it and couldn't keep up payments, seen that here too. To each his own.

Personally, I would still be suspicious till I went to the DMV and tracked it. Did that on my 95 and found out the owner traded it due to a faulty injection pump that no one could figure out what was wrong. Took me almost six months to get it right and numerous battles with Dodge and Cummins. Ran like a dream after that battle though.

Take care of that truck right and it will take care of you and you will enjoy it for a long long time. Had my 89 just three months short of ten years and never had a problem.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Joel
Re:run in program?
I asked Cummins about this a while back at there tech line. They said there is not a break in program. There are significant changes as the engine breaks in such as a feeling of more power, better economy, a little quieter and faster spin up on acceleration. This is related to the break in wear of the engine according to Cummins and not to the program.
