Hey guys,
I was at our Navy Exchange today here in San Diego, and discovered that they just started selling the Royal Purple line, which surprised the heck out of me.

I only have 4000 miles on my 05 CTD, and am leaning toward making the synthetic switch at 10,000 miles. I'm looking for opinions from actual users of these oils. I'd like to see if it will help increase fuel mileage ever so slighty too.

So please, tell what your experiences are with either brand, good or bad. I really am hoping this doesn't turn into an oil war, or brand bashing war. I read on an Amsoil site that they don't care for Royal Purple because they use Moly...and that's bad, supposedly.

I don't know one way or the other myself which to go with.

Both are good oils, Amsoil isn't API certified though where RP is.
This fact alone would be a major consideration for me if my engine was still under warranty.

 

I love the Purple myself, but around here that's as loaded a question as you can get.

 

We run RP in all our gen sets and compressors. The compressors (running RP compressor oil) are showing about 20 to 30 degree decrease in operating temperatures. No complaints other than when the boss sees the bill for 200 gallons of royal purple.

 

I'm an RP fan as well. Every thing from boat to jeep to Harley.

But would wait longer on a Cummins because of the notoriously long break-in .

 

10,000 isn't enough? I thought the manual mentioned that figure, but I could be wrong.

 

Reading the amsoil Action News, They say they are better.

 

Given the choice between brand A and brand RP I'd take the Royal Purple.

There's the API certification, which is a warranty consideration as Infidel mentioned. Then there's the fact that RP makes some of their own additives, while someone like Amsoil just buys whatever from Lubrizol and the like.

Besides, a purple oil just looks WAAAAY cooler

 

I heard from the friend of a reliable source that Amsoil is owned by Ford....

 

I just changed the oil in my girlfriends 01 Yukon this morning that has around 120,000 miles on it, and switched from dino oil to Royal Purple 10W30. That stuff is actually "purple" too. Hope it's good to go.

 

I have heard good things from people running RP in their Cummins, the same for Amsoil. Amsoil advertises that its oil can be used well beyond the manufacturers recommendations and thats why I use it(50k so far on this batch). RP, as far as I know does not recommend or offer using their oil for extended drains at least not as far as Amsoil.
If I was changing every 7k I would probably use dino oil. If I changed every 10-15 I would use a good synthetic, don't know which one since at the moment I am not concidering it.
If I was trying to run extended drains of the 50 plus thousand miles per change I would and do use Amsoil. Many Cummins drivers successfully drive 100k plus using extended drain instructions recommended by Amsoil.

 

i personnally have never seen royal purple for sale,and i cover about 1/4th the state of iowa.just where can you buy it???as for amsoil it's about the same trying to find it, but my dealer will deliver it to me,just brought me 2 gallons 2 weeks ago,and he lives 6o miles away.

Amsoil can deliver its products to you by mail and if you use the preferred customer program($10 for six months or 20 per year) its cheaper than retail enough so shipping is not prohibitive. At least not for me here in Tx.
