rotella 5-40
I've been using 5w40 synthetic Rotella for a while now and it has been great. Cold starts are very smooth even in chilly temps.
But im only using it because I bought a bunch of it at once when it was still a CI-4+ oil. Now even it has switched to CJ blend.
I have two oil changes left....then im prob switching to John Deere +50 oil. It's still a CI-4 oil.

I just switched over to 5W40 Rotella synthetic on my last oil change. I found it was $10 a gallon cheaper than the same kind of oil from Valvoline. I refuse to use anything but it now. Especially in the winter and the temps drop down to -40*C at times.
I tried Rotella 5w40 for just over 3K and did not like the engine noise so I tried Amsoil 5w30 HDD, I heard less engine noise and that surprised me. I can say I increased my fuel mileage by 1/2 mpg when I went from 15w40 Delvac to 5w40 Rotella Synthetic but then I also got a 6/10 increase when I went to Amsoil 5w30 HDD.
I run it. I ran it in the summer too except this year due to cost but its come down. When I had my bypass filter on (97 powerstroke) it was good for about 12-15k before a change.
As stated starts way easier in winter.
So by now I 've run mostly this oil for about 5 years winter and summer.

Block heater or not, there's almost 3 gallons sitting in the sump.
Wouldn't an oil that had a pour point of -42C or even -50C be a better choice?
Is all the 5w40 stuff a synthetic? Walmart out here has rotella 5w40 for 19 bucks a gallon and I am having trouble justifying spending that much on oil when I can get all the other 15w40's for 10-12 bucks a gallon.
Hmmm... you sure you getting the best protection? That Rotella has a pour point of -36C. (sounds like a group III oil) Even if it was only -30, just how much does it flow.

Maybe so, but it only hits -40*C here a few times a winter. I can tell you it flows much better than a standard dino oil. Had to boost my buddie's 6.7 last winter because his engine couldn't turn over fast enough. Gotta love 15w40 dino oil in -30... He switched to 5W40 synthetic after that mishap.
All I know is that my truck stays plugged in when its that cold. I'm not stupid when it comes to the cold and engines. I'll probably put a pan heater on soon.
