reliability issue
reliability issue
I'm about ready to sell my Jeep and buy a Cummins. I really want a 12v but I wouldn't mind a 24v. What I wanted to ask was other than the vp44 and the other known defects of the 24v how does it compare reliability wise to a 12v?
I don't consider any of the issues beat like a dead horse defects. Every time you hear of a lift pump or vp failure, there's thousands still going that don't get discussed. The people on this board really represent a very small fraction of Cummins drivers. Don't ask the folks here that have bombed thier trucks. Ask the guys in the hayfield with 700,000 plus miles that are still running the factory hoses and belts that don't have a use for an email address. I can tell you where a white 99 with every bit of 800,000 miles is sitting right now, that has a trailer that has not been uncoupled since it was purchased in late 98 with a Case 580 that takes a ride on that trailer every morning except Sunday.
If you get one of these trucks to run till it dies, you'd better dern well get the color you like cause your going to look out over the hood for a dern long time.

Exactly what he said...
MOST of the time when we talk about stuff breakin is because we bring it on ourselves with the mods we make and its not the mods that cause the defects its how we take advantage of the new found power of the mods... take my truck for example got a brand new turbo had fun for two days before the tranny went out because i was having just a lil bit to much fun doing donuts at a wide spot in the road
... so if you mod it and drive it like you stole it be prepared to pay..
but if you keep it stock and drive it how dodge made it to be driven you wont have many probs at all.

I liked all four of my Cummins powered Rams and will likely own a 5th Cummins powered Ram. The 6.7L 6spd auto keeps creeping into my mind. Yeah I know about the flashes and lower mileage. I'm used to the lower mileage but the dealership could be in Egypt and I wouldn't know the difference with my current truck. Why not find an '03 or newer ISBe with common rail. Preferably an '05 ISBe with the fuel pump in the proper location in the tank? That would be my preference if it's feasible. Just my humble owned them all opinion. They were all very reliable except for the a/c evaporators.
I got rid of a Jeep to get my new Dodge. I love the motor and the quality of people that enjoy the Cummins. I have to say coming from 10 city and 13 hwy in my Jeep to 15 city and 19 hwy in my Dodge has made the cost of fuel pretty easy to accept.
