Just got my renewal today $303 plus smog certificate. $204 of it is weight fee.
If Sacramento CA isn;t the home of the biggest organized crime syndicate in America I'll kiss Jerry Browns bald crown. With that said do I have to worry about passing this smog? My truck runs great other than the occasional 4th gear search but step down on the pedal and a big flume of black smoke comes out, which is handy when passing on the road

 

They blip your throttle 3 times and check for residual smoke. Basically smoke has to dissipate within 3 seconds. Shop for your smog, I was quoted $80-$100, but found a place for $38. Don't pay $80+ for someone to rev your engine 3 times.

P.S. Wish mine was $300, I think mine was still right about $500 last summer.

 

You should move to Texas, that is unless you are liberal then move to Oregon or Washington.

Just had a smog test done last month. I am in Solano County (Between Sacromento and San Francisco). I too was worried about passing the smog test, but my smog guy realizes that people do not like having to smog a vehicle that never needed to be tested before so he was pretty nice about the whole thing.

First he plugged into the OBDII port to make sure there was no programmer installed (I had previuosly removed my Smarty).

Then he looked under the hood for any aftermarket goodies (I re-installed my original air intake).

He then started the engine and stepped on the go peddle several times while looking in the rear view mirror to see how much smoke came out the exhaust. He told me that he has never seen any diesel truck of this age not smoke, as long as the smoke dissipated in a reasonable amount of time (About ten seconds). Apparently, this smoke test (Or snap test) is all at the opinion of the person doing the snap test. They do not put anything in the exhaust pipe. It is just a visual test.

By the way, I passed the test easily. I should also mention that I told the smog guy that I had put injectors in a few years ago and he told me I did not need to tell him, as he would have never known by just looking at the engine.

Luckily I saved my original air intake. Only took a few minutes to replace and to remove the Smarty. I was prepared to put the old injectors back in but glad I did not need to. Sorry for the long post. Hopes this helps

 

Buddy of mine from college owns a smog shop in Newbury park, Moe's Smog. Ask for Patrick (owns and smogs them). It's a test only so no BS.
