If you run a 10 sec bu, you can wrench on a Cummins. As Wanna said, don't rule out the older models with the mechanical pumps. These trucks will still last forever, get you the fuel mileage you want, and are simple enough for you to work on. Hang out here for a few days and with the help from the very knowledgeable folks on this site, you can make a wise purchase. Perhaps you can venture into a private sale, I don't always trust you are getting the best bang for your buck at a dealer.
I've had my simple as a rock 1st Gen for over a year now, it has not cost me anything, never left me stranded, and runs like a champ. There are trucks like mine with over a million miles on them, can't get that from a gasser.
