I think everyone saw this coming, but it's even better than expected.
(yes, I realize some of you 12 valvers can claim the same, took 'em long enough to get back to where they started...)

Yeah, and the prices are going to be around 50K... :O gonna take a while to recoup that. Don't get me wrong, I like it, but I can't take the price tag.

If I had to buy another truck, yeah I might get the new 1500 diesels. It is not enough truck to make me loose interest in my 260k mile , almost 20 year old truck. I am content to continue putting money in my 12v every so often for now.

**** those are some good numbers! Pricey, yes, but there is plenty of money out there! Most people who are considering a 1500 diesel are comparing them against diesel SUV's like the Porsche Cayenne diesel etc..

Diesel Power did an article and comparison with 1500 diesel vs. 2500 diesel. In a 500 mile freeway driving loop (no towing) cruise set 75mph they recorded slightly over 28mpg with the 1500. Very good for a Laramie 4x4 with 3.55 gears.

Almost exactly a buck more for diesel fuel compared to regular gasoline in my parts.
Seems like that needs to be figured into the equation.
When I bought my trucks diesel was way under a buck, it was a no brainer then.

But, at least you get back your diesel investment (and then some) at resale, so the $3k upcharge for the 1500 diesel isn't a real factor.
Example: My 2003 CTD was $28k new, $4k more than the same truck with a Hemi. When I sold it two years ago I got $18k, similar Hemis were being advertised for $12k in my area, so I "made" $2k vs. a Hemi. It's not just Cummins Fever either, the Jeep Liberty CRDs are holding their value quite a bit better than the gassers. I believe VWs and Mercedes diesels are in the same boat.

Might be a mistake, but according to AutoWeek, the diesel is only $3k more than the Hemi:

I was looking at a truck that I would actually buy for the wife, 4x4, SLT... it was 48 or 50 K. I'm sure the 30K base price was a 2wd ST with no options. Speculation only, not a fact.

Not sure if you guys have priced other half-ton trucks...but it's pretty easy to exceed $50k, regardless if it's Ford, Chevy or Dodge.
Regardless of manufacturer or engine option, you have to be judicious on the options sheet if you want to keep the truck affordable.
I wouldn't generalize the Ram 1500 Eco Diesel as "too expensive" merely because a magazine tested a fully-loaded model, because the same could be said of any fully-loaded half-ton.
Ramtrucks.com shows the Eco Diesel as a $2,850 option.
By comparison:
Ford Ecoboost - $2,395 option
Ford 6.2 - $7,920 option
Chevy 5.3L - $1,100 option
...and none of these offers the same combination of pulling power and great mpg.

No, I totally agree, I'm just cheap. It's hard to justify buying it when the wife's 08 Hemi Mega that is in good shape and only has 60K miles on it is paid for... the only downside is the terrible fuel mileage.

You can buy a good bit of gas with that car payment. Paid for is good.

I'll wait till Mr O declares another cash for clunkers scam.
